Going to be picking up a game 460 miles round trip. I can either rent a a U-haul or borrow my buddies truck which is normal size. Im just wondering if star trek voyager would fit in a dodge dakota dissasembled. If not where are some of the places you guys have rented vehicles from?

U-Haul around here is .79 cents per mile during the week and .99 cents per mile Friday - Sunday. Add in the daily rental rate, insurance and gas on top of that.

You can also get a business rate at uhaul that's something like $79 for the first 100 miles, .59 for every mile after that.

Supposedly enterprise rents by the day and not by the mile, but the ones around me never have vans.

I usually rent a pickup from National. Usually around $90 per day (plus taxes = $110 per day) unlimited mileage. Plus gas and road food for the driver.

I found in my experiences that Uhaul winds up being more expensive up front. However, all the other companies I noticed (Ryder, Budget, ETC) seem to charge a much cheaper rate up front, but then they tell you on top of that you pay per mile. Things may have changed recently.

if the weather's looking ok you might want to consider renting a trailer to haul behind the pickup just to give you enough space to move the entire cabinet.

a couple of days rental from U-Haul shouldn't cost you more than $50 or so with no mileage charges.

if you really want to rent a truck you might want to see if there are any local options... in Seattle there's a tool rental house that also does trucks (Handy Andy's) that's about half of what U-Haul charges.

Not long ago Ryder had an online special that gave you 500 free miles. I rented a 16-ft truck with a lift gate, drove 482 miles round trip, and it cost me about $89 total (+ 2 tanks of diesel).

Didn't see that ad online anymore, although the local Ryder place told me they'd do it again if I called them rather than booking it online...

Ryder has a good daily rate, and the first 500 miles are free.

Enterprise Cargo Van

I've had pretty good luck with renting cargo vans from Enterprise. There's no milage charge and you can get the van for an entire weekend (pick up Friday night return by Monday morning) for about $150 in the Washington DC metro area.

The only downside is that since it's a van, you'll have to place cabinets on their side to fit. Even a jukebox (my last haul) was too tall to fit in the van upright.

I almost always go with Ryder... I got the 500 free miles last time. They also have lift gates on almost all of their trucks which beats the tar out of a ramp!

cheers
/Tim

liftgate is a major plus for getting those big games...

luckily for me i work at a used car lot and we have a box truck with liftgate thats a "permanant resident" heh..

so for me all my poor ash needs to do is comeup with gas money to borrow it... and i was sitll having doubts about getitng that thing.. sad, isnt it?

if you throw in the towel, LMK :D

If the Voyager game hasn't been disassembled make sure you have the correct tools to take it apart. Don't need much but if it has the correct original bolts you will need a T-30 Torx socket or driver. The 8 bolts holding the roof on are Torx button head bolts but it's possible someone replaced them with regular bolts which would be 7/16" hex. Someone had taken mine apart and lost the original bolts, all I could find was button head bolts that use regular Allen wrenches so take a set of Allen wrenches incase. When you get all 8 bolts out of the roof before you lift it off you need to unplug the wires that supply the voltage to the lights on the roof. Looking at the monitor from the seat it's on the left side monitor end. Theirs a hole in the cabinet that's behind where the roof bolts are on that side. Best to go in though the back door of the monitor cabinet and it's in the upper right corner. Just unplug the connector and be careful not to pinch the wires when you lift the top off, kinda pull that side of the top out from the cabinet a little. You will need a Phillips head screw driver to take the 4 screws out the front bottom of the seat to get access to the 3 bolts that hold the floor to the seat and once you push back the rear seat section the floor just lifts up out of the front side of the monitor cabinet as it just sets in a cradle. That's it, you will have 4 pices that will fit in a regular pickup truck. the monitor end is the heaviest part and a lift gate would make life easer but it is on wheels. Good luck, you got a great deal.:D

I would go to my website www.DontRentATruck.com or DontRentAMonvingTruck.com and have it moved the BobN way. I have partnered with a few independent movers who run across country at regular intervals. It is really for one-way home moves but they will pick up games as well. They will pack the truck, deliver and unload for the same cost of renting a moving truck one-way and the price of gas.
