I keep wanting to try playing my PS2, which has basically been a DVD player for the kids for the last 2 years, but I have no idea what great games can still be had for this system. Give me 5 good titles that a retro NES guy like myself may like. I picked up a few games about 4-5 years ago when they were in bargain bins, but only liked one of them and that was War of the Monsters. I also remember grabbing Defender, Transformers, Abe's Oddyssey and Atari Classics. I haven't touched any of them in a long time.

PM me your address and I'll send you God of War 2. I think I have that still sealed at home somewhere.

Any of the GTA series should give you some mindless driving fun.

My favorite was Vice City. Lots of Cheesy 80's music.

That was a great game.

If you RPG games this is one of my favorites.

Oh shit, I still own that one too. I also have PBA Bowling and Madden 2007 or so.

The Chainsaw massacre mission in GTA:VC is the single best gore and blood scene from any game on the PS2 platform.

Man I loved that game. I got a new PS2 for Christmas 2002, and I played Vice City for 3 solid months until I beat it 100%.

Ahhh...the days of no kids......

Metal Gear Sold 3: Snake Eater and get the subsistence version if you can as it has two retro Metal Gear(MSX) games you can also play. It's one of the best stealth games ever...

Katamari Damacy
We Love Katamari
NASCAR 07
ESPN Baseball
Pinball Hall of Fame Williams

Well, it's ranked by critical/industry reviews and rating, not kid's receptions or sales numbers.

I am more into niche/oddball titles, but here is my list of favorite ps2 games:

SMT: Nocturne - One of the best rpg's of all time

Digital Devil Saga - One of my favorite traditional rpg's...love the story and universe

Echo Night Beyond - Very cool, scary first person puzzle game

Everblue 2 - first person scuba diving rpg

King's Field: The Ancient City - beautiful game, thoughtful and exploration-heavy

R-Type Final - the ultimate R-Type

Shadow Tower: Abyss - the pinnacle of the King's Field series and precursor for Demons/Dark Souls. Japan only but easily playable without translation

REZ - one of my all time fav games for any system anywhere, made by sega. i think there is a downloadable version of it on the xbox360 in hd. it has one of the coolest soundtracks and great beats too. hard to explain it until you play it. sooooo good.

There are so many awesome PS2 games out there. Transformers is fun,but it's based on Transformers Armada though. The boss battles are fun as hell ,especially one in particular that you fight out in the ocean.

The Mark of Kri is pretty bad ass. From the animation,it honestly looks like a Disney type game but....with the blood and gore of GTA. Fun stuff!

I'll also say pick up Castlevania:Lament of Innocence and Castlevania:Curse of Darkness. Awesome games. The music of Curse of Darkness is phenomenal.

You can probably buy all these on ebay for $15 or less. (Most likely less)

Shadow of the Colossus, Ico (if you don't already have these for PS3)
Burnout 3: Takedown
Okami
We Love Katamari
Gran Turismo 4
God of War series
Metal Gear Solid series
Ace Combat series
Devil May Cry series

Well for GTA, I can't play GTAIII or Vice City anymore after San Andreas. Since San Andreas introduced the concept of "swimming" among other things, the older games just don't cut it. Although I did like Vice City's amount of ramps to jump your vehicles off of and it gives you money for it.

The first Transformers (Armada) game is cool BUUTTTT you can't swim. Robots + water in the shows = WIN. Robots + water in this game = DEAD. Hate it. I still keep it tho, but won't ever play it again.

R-Type is good but short. There is a Silpheed game too thats fairly similar. Don't forget about the Capcom Classics Collection (vol1 and 2), Namco Museum, Sonic + Collection, Sega Classics, Neo Geo Battle Museum, SNK Arcade Collection. You already have the Atari one, but I didn't like that one as much as the Midway set for the Saturn.

Castlevania, LoI is cool but I don't like some of the controls. Burnout series is good, but all those games are basically the same. If you like driving games with a damage model, try finding the NFS game, but its kinda rare. Flatout and Flatout 2 are good. The first of that series is kinda hard on the 2nd to 3rd tier tho.
