Hi - Looking for the best place to get my Data East Checkpoint cpu board tested/repaired if necessary.
Having trouble with my dmd. Its as if its getting no signal, but I've replaced with a newer power board and led dmd.
Thinking it might be the cpu.
Thanks in advance.
Rob

Might be, might not be.

Have you checked the DMD board for the proper power?

Does the game play otherwise? That could just be a bad connector.

Hi - Thanks for responding!
I got the game in parts in 2004, and it was missing a lot of parts. Spent a couple years sourcing what I needed and finally got it working!
Developed a problem with the vuk which did some damage to the original cpu. Tried to fix it myself....big mistake.
Bought a working cpu online and it started to have the same problem with the vuk, so I just stopped using it for a looong time.
A couple of weeks ago, I thought I would try and get it working so that my grandkids could play it over the holidays, but when I turned it on, the display didn't work at all, which is a little weird, cause I've never had that issue before.
So, I bought a new upgraded power supply board hoping that was the issue...it wasn't
Bought a new led DMD hoping that was the issue....it wasn't!
Even though I did a lot of work myself over the years, I don't really know what I'm doing, but I'm game to learn. I'm not sure how to check the dmd board for the proper power.
The game, otherwise, is fully functional.
Thanks, Rob

I've yet to own a data east, but i have owned sterns, bally/williams, sega and gottlieb.
The first thing i usually do for any pin with serious issues is find a list of voltage checks and test points.
Sometimes it can a little time consuming, but i usually list them all out.
Been multiple times that voltage check led me to solutions.
One time i went through like 15 checks only to find out the battery holder was bad, lol.
You can really learn a lot with the pinwiki information.

I had that problem on a Williams Sorcerer. It wouldn't boot. I checked the Batteries, and the left most battery top post was dead. I cleaned up a painted rivet, riveted in place, and Bam - got it working.

Hi
Checked the voltage at both ends of the power cable to the DMD - they were the same -
5
12.3
74.8
112
99.6
Very close to what is written on the legend on the power board.
Battery holder is fine....I also replaced the cpu with an older one that sort of still works with the same results!
Checked all the fuses....they are fine.
I am starting to get a little discouraged, but I'll keep on looking!

Hi
Checked all three battery holders....they are all clean and seem to be OK....replaced the cpu with an older one that sort of works and am having the exact same issues.
Thanks for you help!

To be clear i wasn't suggesting it was the battery holder. Was just saying that i went through an entire list on a system 7 and one of the last tests was to check to see if the battery voltage was present at a test point and it wasn't.
I took the long way to figure out the issue, but it was still found.

I'm not familiar with Data easy pins.
But if it were mine i would follow the test chart in the link i posted.
If that was what you were testing, either the pinwiki is off or you are testing something else, since those voltages are nothing alike.
There is a pic in the link and they explain how to test them.

I would reach out to Chris Hibler. If he doesn't work on them he probably can point you in the right direction.

Hi
I think I'm testing the correct pins? -
If I look at the pinwiki diagram, I see 5 pins out of 8 with expected voltages.
-110...I get -112
-98...I get -99.6
5...I get 5
12...I get 12.3
68...I get 74.8
Please let me know if I'm off base.
Thanks.

Those look pretty close. I'd say you don't have power issue for the dmd.
I usually also test the ground pins to the screws that hold the boards in place for continuity.

I had my Whirlwind boards repaired by Eugene Mosh. His work was fantastic, and at a reasonable price (in my opinion). He went above and beyond in preemptively replacing components that would have likely failed soon.

He is in Montana, but was super responsive in answering my questions and quick with shipping.

If you need his contact info let me know.

He kept my system 2 boards for over a year and never fixed them. Gave me lots of excuses then finally sent me a different sent of boards. Tread lightly.

This is why i started fixing my own pinball boards (not him personally).
Turns out it's kinda rewarding, saves money and time.
Most of them aren't as complex are arcade boards.

If my boards were going in the mail, i think it would be to Chris Hibler.
He has a good online presence on pinside.
