There are a few different multi boards out there. I want to to put one in a DK cab. I picked up a cab that has no guts but it is complete, sanded and pretty much ready to paint. Who makes the best DK multi to put in it? Any advice?

Thanks,
Tracy

The Arcadeshop multi emulates DK/DKJr best... and it supports DKII... but you're going to pay through the nose for it. DK3 emulation is actually a half-step down from the Chinese 48-in-1 boards...it's missing more sounds.

Wow! You are right. It is a bit on the pricey side. I'm assuming that you load it with your own Roms? If the card supports that rom set then it will work? Does it actually work batter than the jammaboards 60 n 1? I'm trying to justify the price difference I guess.

The pluses of the AS board:

(A) The sounds tend to be more accurate... DK sounds just about perfect.
(B) MOST high scores work... and with initials too...
(C) Menu system is much classier than the 48-in-1 / 60-in-1
(D) Instant on... oh how I love instant on...
(E) More games are slowly (and I mean SLOWLY) being released
(F) The same board can be run in either VERTICAL or HORIZONTAL orientation... but not both
(G) Supports "Atari-Like" blinking LEDs...
(H) You can order the games in any way you want
(I) The only multigame board to support Donkey Kong II

The minuses of the AS board:
(A) Price
(B) New games are TOO-SLOWLY being released
(C) Price
(D) Some of the games do not have working High Scores
(E) Price
(F) Loading in the ROM's each update
(G) Price
(H) The fact that AS charges for an addtional amount for the power supply and serial cable pretty much required to program the things...
(I) Price

As for the ROM's... there is a website that carries all the ROMs for the AS board... I can PM it to you if you end up buying the board... they're essentially the same ROMs used in MAME but you're limited to the games it supports by the programming software.

Oh... and did I mention that the PRICE is simply out-f*cking-rageous and has been for years?

Man, I had to laugh at this. thanks for the great response. I might sell off some boards to finance this board. Shoot, a good working dk board is 200 dollars.

I think that 379$ is way too much for a multi-board, especially with so little options also, are you sure that it plays vertical games on an horizontal monitor? Those HK boards also output to VGA, and that arcadeshop kit doesnt.

Too bad. For 200$, and with output to VGA, it would make a nice board for bartop mini cabs at home.

Where did anyone say it plays vertical games on a horizontal monitor? I said it plays both vertical or horizontal games... but not both (ie: you can't have both vertical games and horizontal games setup)... you choose which ever game set you currently have your monitor set up for...

If it's a horizontal cab you run the horizontal set... if it's a vertical cab you run the vertical set...

... that said, they DO have some horizontal games modified to run on the vertical setup... Missile Command... some VS titles... Crystal Castles... etc.

BTW: VGA sucks for classic games...

`just sayin'...

The only problem with the Double Donkey Kong set up is that Donkey Kong uses DJ Jr's runs sounds... and it's quite annoying IMHO.

I need to get the most bang for the buck. Space forces the multi issue. I'd love to have all dedicated games but I can have a nice room with just 8 or so if I do it right.

This is true. I was contimplating this for my DK but the difference in sound quickly crossed that option off my list. I wouldnt hesitate to put one in a junior cab though, if the price was right. I wonder if you could take some chips from a DK board and make the sounds right. Then junior would sound different but I could tolerate that change.

I would just start off with a 60-1, Nixs has them for a good price. Try it out and then you can decide whether the AS multi is worth burning a hole in your wallet. You could always resell the 60-1 later and you wouldnt be out much.

Well Beer...

Regardless if you pick up a 48-in-1 or AS board... let me know and I'll shoot you over a nice games list for the control panel (if you want it)...

When it comes to multi-boards you DO get what you pay for. I have tried LOTS of them, and the Arcadeshop is far and away the BEST. The missing/distorted/wrong sound effects that plague ALL of the -in-1 boards just ruins the experience for me.

If you have a REALLY bad memory, or were not that big into these games when they were new, then you might not ever know the difference. To me, however, the higher cost is justified. I simply couldn't enjoy playing "Galaxian" on ANY of the 39-in-1 or 60-in-1 boards that I have and have tried. On the Arcadeshop board, it is faithful and just as satisfying as if the original board was in the cabinet. To me, you CAN'T put a price on that...

Sure you can... evidently it's $379.00 + the price of the power supply and the price for the serial cable.

:)

(and for me the price for a serial to USB converter)

Well stated Frizz... I am buying 60-1.. Best bang for the buck. $379.. I need A-bomb explosion to make that justifyable :)

The price for the Arcadeshop board didn't seem too bad when the 39 in 1's were like $400. Those Chinese folks really know how to under cut each other's prices- and I love it!

Well I own an Arcadeshop board and it is just much nicer than the competition in every way. Yes it's is much more expensive. It's a trade off that you make, just like everything in life.
