I have a Congo Bongo cab that I am converting into an Eliminator cab. The scratched up solid brown has to go. What would be the best matching product out there for the wood grain look?

Thanks

Woodgrain wallpaper.
Thanks, I was hoping for more specific than that from possibly someone who has redone one of these cabinets with a close to factory match. There are a shitload of wood grains to choose from. Maybe one of the arcade renovation places?

If some of them came in brown paint, like some of the other Sega cabinets, I'd spray it with oil based satin brown, to match.

... Bump

I am also interested in hearing the answer. Right now I have freshly painted black sides. I really cannot make up my mind on whether to keep it that way or add woodgrain.

Unless your a fan of Merle Haggard, velvet Elvis Paintings and live in a single wide, I would say paint it. Woodgrain looks like a batch of hot ass.

The cab the game came in was wood grain so that is how I plan on recovering it. Yeah, it's funky looking in wood grain but that is the look I am restoring it to. I am not surprised that there aren't that many fans for this look out there. I am just hoping that one person who has already found the closest match out there posts what they used.

Thanks

That is part of the charm in my opinion. And sometimes you need to drown your sorrows in a beer while listening to Merle Haggard. ;)

I also picked up a Frogger recently and need to refinish it. I know the wife would be more accepting of it if I painted it, but I can't bring myself to not put on cheesy fake woodgrain.

I'm also intrested in other woodgrain options since it sound like the arcadeshop stuff is too dark? Anyone have a pic of the arcadeshop king's walnut?

This question comes up here a lot, and I don't think I've seen a decent answer to it yet.

I'm interested because I'm restoring two Neo Geo Gold cabinets... And to be a true "Goldie", it needs to have wood grain sides.

The difficulty in this is obviously the amount of different wood grains that are out there. Color, texture, style, grain, etc. You factor in any fading from fluorescent lighting and/or sun, and you get something that's very difficult to match.

As I need to do a Sega cabinet myself this year, I recently ordered some woodgrain samples. I'll post the results of my findings.

Cost a little bit more than vinyl, not completely original-like, and adds probably a 1/32" to the panel width, but...

Consider Formica or WilsonArt laminate. At Home Depot, they have samples of a bunch of different woodgrain patterns and shades.

Judging by the sample on the Wilsonart website, I'd choose either the Wild Cherry or Windsor Mahogany. I guess it's just a matter of personal preference. I'm looking to restore a Zaxxon, and I'm going the Merle Haggerd route.

Even if it doesn't match, Im thinking the laminate would be a better option.

I don't own any games that have/had woodgrain sides, nor would I :) But I can say that if I did have to restore one I would go the laminate route for sure. If someone was going to di it and didn't have a router, laminate bit, laminate roller, etc., it would be pretty pricey. But if you already have those things the laminate itself isn't that expensive. Plus it's easy to work with and durable as hell.

If I had another red Neo Geo to do, I would go with a red textured laminate as opposed to painting.

Ok, so I got some woodgrain samples from DesignerWallcoverings.com, one of the few places I could find vinyl woodgrain with a width of 36 inches.

Upright picture (Tac/Scan): TL (WLS-9706), TR (WLS-9717), BR (WLS-9718), BL (WLS-9709). These are a lot darker than they show on their website. As you can see, none of them are really a good match for this particular upright, which lacks any reds (mostly pale yellow and brown).

Table picture (Eliminator 4-player): L (WLS-9706), C (WLS-9709), R (WLS-9718). In this picture, the WLS-9709 is actually fairly close, though I wish the grain pattern was a little more oak-y.

Any suggestions on what to try next? Let me know and I'll order some samples. As for these samples, if anyone wants to borrow them to compare them to a cabinet they have, let me know.
