I connected mine as 2 2' strips, and they fit perfectly.

Did you use the 2 sided tape provided? I think a couple wire clamps would be better.

I had Crazy Climber make it out of the same material that he makes the Space Invader and Berzerk sets out of about a year and a half ago. I put "galvanized" vinyl over it for a more interesting finish. On the back of the letters I installed RGB LED strips which are controlled by an LED-Wiz, each letter can light independently of each other. To stand the letters off the marquee, I JB Welded a piece of plexi (that was painted flat black on its back) to the back of the marquee, I also JB Welded weld nuts to the back of the letters, and used 1/4-20 bolts and spacers to hold them in place. Posts 16, 65, 261, 267, 296, and 333 go into more detail about it in my build thread on BYOAC.

I love that marquee. Im still messing with the monitor, so its not up and running yet, but should be here shortly. Stoked.
