Like the title says,

Looking for some input on best hand truck for doing restorations. I've been considering looking for one the that converts into a cart for doing side art installations flat.

Anyone have reccomendations?

I have read where guys have said the big air filled tires are not good. Not sure why though. I rented a furniture mover the other day and it had hard little wheels. Crashed hard going down stairs. Make sure you are able to fasten some kind of strap to it that can hold the games to the dolly.

Well, for me the Air filled tires are good, when they are inflated...

Mine over the years have been punctured by all sorts of stuff. I had a game fall off my dolly because I didn't check the tires before using it.

Lets just say, that sucked :D... I check the tires every time now.

The game did survive, but it was no longer "Mint" :(

I have two. one is the appliance variety with little wheels and built in strap. The other has air filled tires. I never get to use it because the tires are always flat...

I would stick to solid tires. You have the flat issue and the issue of bouncing a heavy load with air filled.

Hard tires suck big balls. Period. Get small air filled tires. Go to your local tire store and have them put tubes in there. Check your air occasionally. I almost never have to put air in my tires for my hand truck. I purchased mine at Home Depot years ago. Grey in color. Try other peoples dollies and see what you prefer. The ones with the kickbacks are nice but too heavy unless you get the aluminum ones. Then, they are too expensive.

My 2 cents.

Does anyone actually use a hand truck to get their cabs horizontal for applying side art?

I guess this was one of the big things I was considering, but I don't hear anyone talking about it.

I have one of those Dutro 1600lbs capacity dollies with the large solid kickback wheels and 2 straps. It's excellent for moving games in and out of the house. I have used it to install wheel on the bottom of cabs and even to lay down my Race Drivin cab to resecure the monitor. It won't lay flat though,But if you built a stand the right height to lay it on once you kick it back it would work. I got mine used from A-Z Equipment rental for about $380. They run about $450-$500 new.

I recommend the lightest cart that handles the required load. I have a heavy duty cart that I'm still trying to sell (see here) and replace with something lighter.

It's rated for 1200 lb with ratchet strap and kickout legs. But it really, really sucks hauling an additional 70+ lbs up and down the stairs. These games are heavy enough in the first place.

One other "Interesting" thing I noticed. I just picked up a new hand truck the other day (A convertible) which said "Good for 800lbs", except if you read the rating on the tires.. they are good to 400LBS. So is the 800Lbs only true if you use both tires? :D
