I am in the middle of restoring two gauntlet cabinets. One had all the art stripped and was converted to "V-Ball", the other is in very poor condition with the side-art spraypainted black. A previous owner attempted to remove the paint in a few spots with the expected terrible results.

I'm looking for good reproduction Gauntlet sideart that is actually available for sale. I read about some art by the user "JP1" here (and JP11 on another site) that seemed to be well-liked, but he won't reply to me, so I can only assume he does not wish to produce any more. Other sites like arcadeoverlays have them, but I have heard second (or third) hand that the quality is not very good. Certainly, my experience with the "we sell any artwork" sites has been something that looks like a laminated inkjet print with the wrong colors.

Any suggestions? I may be able to preserve a CPO (I purchased two Gauntlet control panels) but I need sideart, front art and a marquee.

Ideally, I would restore one as Gauntlet and one as Gauntlet II.

arcadeshop.com has a beautiful screen printed Gauntlet I marquee and front sticker. So I could be covered there.

I see on ebay the seller "marcus09999" out of Toronto sells a Gauntlet II marquee, but I think it is inkjet. I'd like to find someone who has purchased one.

But in any case my big problem is the sideart.

Right now everything you find is inkjet and mostly not very good quality, except for the Gauntlet I marquee and front sticker.

It has been stated by Phoenix Arcade and/or This Old Game that as soon as Scott Evans finds the original films in his warehouse, both the sideart and CPO will be screened. Right now that is where we stand.

I bought a Ms. Pac marquee from this guy a few years back and it was garbage. Save yourself the hassle and customs hassles of having to return his junk. He changed his user ID since then too.

JP1 is where I got 2 sets of my full sideart for my 2 Gauntlet cabinets. I know most of the other places are only selling the half sideart.
To my knowledge he still can have these made. I know he's pretty busy so be patient on waiting for his reply and he should get back to you.
As for the front artwork and the marquee artwork arcadeshop doesn't sell the inkjet and they're printed on a mylar type material.
I ordered mine through them and they look awesome.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

I just left the two Gauntlet shells. I noticed the former Gauntlet II with the painted-over sideart also has a front coin sticker in place, also painted over. I wonder if I can clean that paint off? I'll try isopropanol and a q-tip later today. If that does not work I might try methanol; the worst I can do is ruin the sticker. Which it is now.

Of course, the op had to put two grabber screws through it. I mean, what's the point of artwork if you can't put a screw through it, right?

For now, I'll buy the nice repros from arcadeshop.com and restore the marquees with Gauntlet I and replace at least the one sticker with a Gauntlet I sticker.

I'll wait on the sideart and see what is available from JP1 or the other sources, rather than jumping on something I will regret.

On the subject of Gauntlet side-art...

Yesterday I took my (already restored) Gauntlet home. It had been a trashed Gauntlet II when I acquired it, with a nice Gauntlet I header marquee but terrible control panel and front.

Like so many arcade games I find, at some point it had been decided to put it outside where it could get rained on and rusted. The Gauntlet II CPO was ruined, but through a lot of patience with a heatgun--then scubbing with baking soda and a toothbrush--I managed to rescue an almost perfect Gauntlet I CPO from underneath. The cabinet had nice side art; the big problem was the front of the cabinet. When it was put outside, water got under the black vinyl on the particle board and it all fell off. It did not swell or crack the particle board.

I ended up stripping the vinyl from the front using compressed air and repainting using the RustOleum industrial coatings semi-gloss black spraypaint (they used to call them the "hard hat" coatings). disassembled and repainted the coin doors, and redid all the joysticks and carriage bolts. It's been floating around for a few years, visiting various offices and things, then I had my house for sale so it went into storage for three years. I finally got moved late last year, and started rebuilding the arcade. Years in storage had taken their tole on the the electrolytics so it's been a slow process of shopping-out each game before I powered up.

This Gauntlet was going to come to my home, the other Gauntlet I am restoring will go to a friend and the third for sale or loaned to someone else.

Last week, I rented a truck anf brought it and several others into the University where I work. We were launching a big fancy lab for our video game development program, and we decided to have five arcade games there for the grand opening.

On the way home yesterday, it's ratchet strap broke and it rolled (my games are now on casters, too many back injuries when I was younger) across the U-haul and hit Defender and Centipede, tearing this Gauntlet's near-perfect sideart.

I'm not having a good Gauntlet week.

I have some bad phone pictures of one of the two I am still restoring. I can take photos of the other, but all the art has been stripped and it looks like a crappy Gauntlet conversion with the conversion art pulled off. I just took them last night to send to a friend.

Here's the one with the painted-over art. I tried last night and found that Xylene would remove the spraypaint leaving the front decal intact, but once I got most of the paint off of the sideart, the Xylene removed the silkscreening as well. The right-side decal was already ruined from a previous owner's attempt to clean it, so it was my test spot.

I think it was a Gauntlet. Then converted to Gauntlet II, then the side and front art painted over to convert it to Gauntlet II and a sticker placed over part of the marquee. Then the guy I bought it from removed that sticker, exposing the un-yellowed portion of the marquee you see.

I think the control panel was recently mated to the machine.

Sorry my phone camera is so crummy in poor lighting, I can bring in my SLR if you really want pics of a trashed Gauntlet.

...and if you meant pics of my restored one, I could take them tonight when I get home. It's still in the garage so I can wheel it outside for photos in good light with a real camera. I'm pretty proud of it, actually. I may even have some "before" photos somewhere.

It looks like my gauntlet machine will be coming home soon, it has been at my brother-in-law's house for a looooong time, but he is moving. the front vinyl is almost completely gone, finally i will get some time to work on restoring this machine, can't wait
