There are a lot of games I've considered buying but, after thinking about it, I decided not to because they don't hold repeat play value (Dragon's Lair, TMNT, Golden Axe) or they are fun for a quick game but aren't really going to keep you interested for hours and hours (Gauntlet (because freeplay would seem to kill it).

What are the best games that you can play for hours on end and hold their challenge?

Missile Command
Centipede

To me, it is based on randomness -- what game is never the same twice. For me, Robotron is the perfect example. I will never get tired of playing Robotron because it is never the same thing twice.

It's an obvious answer, but many JAMMA games have terrible replay value after you finally beat the game. Until then, though, they are a blast!

I've always thought Swimmer had a lot of replay value. There is enough variety in the levels (which also get progressively difficult) to keep things interesting, and the enemy's movements are very random.

For me, Joust and Bubbles have always had good replay value. If you have a lot of friends visiting the home arcade, 4 player Warlords gets a lot of play.

For replay value, I really like modern pinball machines.

Really surprised that Donkey Kong hasn't been mentioned. I has LOADS of randomness. However, my vote must also go to Robotron. It's just simply the best early 80's game for action and replay value (even though the game is basically simple)...

Spy Hunter. Replay value is excellent; no two games are alike and it's astounding how many different ways you can die. It really becomes very obvious when you start playing longer games.

The game is hard to learn initially (the difficulty puts off EVERY ONE of my guests that want to play it) but it pays off in the long run because it's challenging and so different every time.

My submissions:

Robotron
Missile Command
I, Robot
Major Havoc
Food Fight
Revenge From Mars pinball
several other good DMD pinball games

I'll go with some games that are high on the random element scale:

Donkey Kong
Elevator Action
Crazy Climber
Robotron
Star Castle (hard set)
