I still think Defender/Stargate has the coolest coin sound of all time, and probably the coolest start sound when you hit player 1.

But dayam ever since I got this Juno First the volume keeps getting turned louder and louder.. just love that little tune when you start, then warp in.. and thoughts of what a sub would do start running through my head...

What games do you think have the coolest coin or start sounds?

Defender has one of the best, no doubt. Makes you wanna drop a quarter in. Robotron's variable coin-up sounds (low, rising buzz, crowd cheering, ker-chunk, etc.) is inspired as well.

Namco, though, takes the cake. All of their coin-up sounds are sly cues to the game music/theme they're matched to. Gulping for Pac-Man, heroic theme for Galaga, little diddy for Dig Dug, etc.

The coin-up "gong" for Atari's System 1 and 2 games. Always loved that sound.

The music that plays if you hit a button on Reactor (that gives you instructions) is pretty sweet. Does that count as a start sound?

First game that came to my mind when I saw this thread was of course, Defender.

I also think phet hit the nail on the head with Altered Beast.

Big fan of Star Wars "Red Five standing by."
Ooooohohohoho, that one hits the sweet spot for me every time.

2nd for Star Wars. Drop a credit, Obi tells you the force will be with you. Two credits, and he says "Always". Then the Red Five standing by... in that lazy "I do this all the time" pilot-sounding voice. I got goose bumps when I first heard that at 8 years old.

All the ones named so far are great.I always liked the little eerie melody that plays when you drop a coin in Ghost N Goblins. And the Cowabunga you get on TMNT is pretty cool too.And I like Life Force's as well.

It's got to be the coolest game ever made. Well it is for me anyway. :D
Star Trek - Strategic Operations Simulator
