I'm wondering what people think is the very best game ever made, on any "retro" platform... For me is Turrican 2 and 3 on the Amiga. So far ahead of their time, both absolutely unbelievable pieces of programming.

With so many genres out there, its sort of like narrowing down the best song of all time. Everyone likes there own style.

For me?

Donkey Kong
or
Street Fighter 2
or
Star Wars

And if were talking console stuff:

Ocarina of Time
or
Super Mario Bros 3
or
Super Mario Kart

Skyrim if we're not limiting this to genre or time period.
If sticking to classic era arcade games,

for presentation, gameplay, replay value and theme...

Atari Star Wars
Sinistar (cockpit)
Zoo Keeper

I would say Tron but the gameplay is lacking a bit.

Donkey Kong - Because Pacman and other games like it that can be memorized only have a fixed amount of points you can get , Perfect Pacman Score . DK is random and can be played forever and its never the same game . So if you were stuck on a deserted island with a Pacman and Donkey Kong , you'd eventually master Pacman and know everything about it . But DK you could keep playing .

I don't believe any game has had more impact than Pac Man. It changed everything. I don't think it's the greatest game ever or even in top ten. But the craze back then was unbelievable.

This is correct. The Pac Man craze made everything else possible. Corporations saw the incredible opportunity in gaming and tech. It made it mainstream.

Actually Donkey Kong has a kill screen too so you can't play forever.

I know . I meant play forever not by coin up and play till the end of time .

I'm talking about you can play it over and over and never have the same game . Pacman once you master it , theres nothing left to do , its the same game every time .

But this whole topic as other people have posted could also rate a game by its impact when it came out . I'm talking about lasting appeal is what makes a game good , gameplay .

Hi,
If I had to choose only one (1) game, it would probably be the Golden Axe.
But other absolutely fantastic games from my memories and dreams are (no particular order):
Final Fight
R-type
Dragon breed
Saint dragon
Midnight resistance
Ikari Warriors
Guerilla war
Moonwalker (my arcade childhood)
Renegade
Streets of rage
Budokan
Dune
King quest
Gobliiins
Metal mutant
Ishar
Alien breed
Shadow of the beast
Xenon (2)
X-out
Populous
Civilisation
Sim city
Wolfestein 3D
Doom
Unreal
Megalomania
Another world
Flashback
Last ninja
Dizzy
Wing commander
Prince of persia
and also
Space harrier
Outrun

but the most "classic" and best known videogames were probably :
Space invaders
Galaxian
Galaga
Pac man (and variations)
Centipede
Donkey kong
(and many others:))

I think konami and capcom are responsible for the real big revival in the late 80's. An explosion of great titles lead the charge into the 90's. So id have to say the konami big 4, and the street fighter series.

What some people forget, is ms pac was also a catalyst for the arcade crash. It would be years later that games brought back a wow factor

Disco. No. 1
Boonga Boonga
The World Dies Screaming (Atari 2600)
Par-tay...Pizza Par-tay (board)
Ring Fighter
M.C. Kids (Nintendo)
Herbie At The Olympics
Shake The Baby (Flash)
Stern Harness Test PCB

agree, the late 80ties were absolutely fantastic. The games sudenly became much more graphicaly detailed and colorfull. Than before lets say year 86. IMHO it was leap forward. I think that also Sega and Irem had great deal.

Defender is my pick.

I think its the only game I can keep playing and not get burned out on. The degree of difficulty and randomness is incredible for its era.
