Sooner or later I'd like to move forward with my Capcom bowling project - I'm fixing up a beat up Galaxian cab with trashed side art. I'm trying to do this one fairly nice and sort of keep it generic incase I want to ditch capcom bowling down the road and get something else in there.

Anyhow - I know a heat gun is the best way to get the sideart off, but whats the best replacement for these cabs? Vinyl, formica, paint, etc? Aiming for black sides but considered wood grain as well (since its capcom bowling after all)

Geez not a one response? So much for help with this. After looking at the Galaga restoration at Coinopspace I figured I might as well just paint it. Was hoping for other ideas or tips - I'm usually all about helping when it comes to my knowledge (troubleshooting and/or monitor repair) but when it comes to asthetics and woodworking I'm as green as they get. I haven't painted anything in years.

My buddy was making some 48-in-1 machines from worn-out pac/ ms.pac style cabs. His solution to the ugly cab look was to apply adhesive vinyl. He first applied bondo to any imperfections, sanded it, then quickly painted it with some leftover junk paint that he had (to help hide wood scratches), then applied the vinyl. His vinyl was the black stuff from Rikitiki of Thisoldgame.com.
Once he had the vinyl on (which looked awesome, way better than paint), he applied galaga and Donkey kong sideart to each side.

If you don't have a heat gun use a hair dryer. I used a tiger claw, adhesive remover and a hair dryer and was able to pull off galaxian sideart and the full sheets of vinyl covering over it in a short period of time.

If you're going to do it, do it right. Take it down to the wood, bondo and sand the cab, primer, sand, paint, sand, paint, sand, paint.

If you want immediate gratification go with the vinyl, if you want showroom quality roll up the sleeves.

Any junker I clean up...I laminate the sides...cheap and easy! I lot less prep time than if you were to paint.

Cabinet maker shops. In my area, they're in the phone book under "cabinet making, supplies and materials"....or something like that. Call around, the price can fluctuate widely for the same thing.
