Best DK repro joystick?

Well, this was Mike's first attempt at a replacement joystick:

The other one is truely a reproduction. Pretty steep price but he put a lot of work into it to make it exactly to original specs. Do you currently have a DK stick? He also does offer parts to rebuild the originals which would probably be your best bet.

I was put off by the steep price of the repro stick as well, so I took a Nintendo VS joystick I had lying around and bought a new shaft and restrictor plate from Mike's instead. It was still pricey at $24, but way better than $60.

There is absolutely no "suitable" alternative to a true Nintendo stick. Whether you buy the full repro stick from Mikes... or go with the VS stick + 4-way restrictor plate... or buy a used one and fix it up. DO NOT waste your time or money with anything else... it will not "feel" right.

I've never actually seen a DK/Nintendo stick that was "worn out". They're always just frozen up with old grease. Take apart, clean, relubricate, and they always work just fine. What wears out on these?

I agree. There are probably plenty of guys who may have an extra original stick to sell and probably for way cheaper than Mike's. I would post in the wanted section.

If they aren't greased regularly the bearing can rust out. Even after cleaning and lubing, my original DK joystick was just too rusted out to be saved.
