I can relate on the 40th birthday story...
When I turned 40 two years ago, we did NOT celebrate it in any significant way. I was really bummed, because when a friend of ours turned 50 several years ago, we went ALL OUT and threw him a HUGE surprise party and hired an awesome rock band to play for what turned out to be a relatively small number of people as the night wore on.
Now, I certainly wasn't expecting a party like that for my 40th, but it very well may have been the most "low key" birthday of my entire life. And for that, I was pretty bummed. Especially since so many people make such a big deal about turning 40...
Well, I have the game all set up in the arcade now. We had dinner with our friends last night (the same ones mentioned above) and then came home to un-crate the game. It went together really easy, and I even decided to perform the software update to version 1.3 before even running the game for the first time. By around 9pm, it was in place and going through it's first plays. After our friends left, me and my son (who absolutely LOVES the game) played until about 11:30 pm. After having MANY games where we were stuck at 9 to just under 10 million points, we decided to change it to 5 ball play. In my opinion, this made the game a LOT more approachable. With 3 ball play, you are likely to have only ONE good ball and two quick drainers (that is just the nature of this game), but with 5 balls, you get through a lot more achievements, and get to have at least two balls that last for more than 15 seconds.
All in all, I am very happy with it. This morning, I had to go out into the yard and clean out all of the debris from the drains and patio area in preparation for the big storm. We are supposed to be getting anywhere from 4 to 8 inches of rain PER DAY for several days, starting later this afternoon. Hopefully my upgraded drain system and sump pump in the basement will be adequate, as this will probably be the first BIG test of it's capabilities. We live on the side of a mountain down near the base, and a LOT of runoff comes down the mountain behind us when we get over 3 inches of rain. I guess that we have no choice but to wait and see what happens...
