best arcade game update/upgrade/remake/reinvent....

I just finished putting the street fighter 1 back together.. man, that game is horrible! SFII was an amazing improvement!!

Got me to think what was the best arcade game update/upgrade/remake/reinvent.... I would go with SF1=>SFII

Might as well include what was the worst.. I would go with Spyhunter => spyhunter II

I agree with those.

Also, Super Punch-Out was a big improvement over Punch-Out IMO, even though I still love Punch-Out. Karate Champ VS. was a big improvement over Karate Champ as well.

On the flip side of the coin:

Ikari Warriors to Victory Road to Ikari III. That was all downhill, especially Ikari III. The same applies to the three Double Dragon games (with the third being especially bad once again).

Here it goes..
(like>don't like)

Digdug>digdug2
Spyhunter>spyhunter2
Mappy>bouncing mappy
Galaxian>galaga:)
Galaga<galaga3:D
Mario bros> super mario bros(dont stone me! The gameplay just didnt catch on for me)

Agreed that Galaxian is harder then Galaga but I don't care I love Galaga all the way, Yes I am not that great at a lot of games and its fine for me I enjoy all games just the same.

good/ better

Galaga-Galaga88
PP-PP2

LOL

Galaga is better than Galaxian.

Space Duel is better than Asteroids Deluxe which is better than Asteroids.

Ms. Pac Man is better than Pac Man.

1943 is better than 1942.

Good Better Best
Galaxian < Galaga < Gaplus

Not played Galaga 88 much, but I don't think its bestest although it is pretty. And Galaga III may be slightly worse than Gaplus but I haven't played mine enough since the rom swap to judge. I know theres a ship trick that Gaplus has that's not in Galaga III which should make the game better but it does seem harder for some reason.

And I am still looking for a reasonable Namco Classics collection 1 as I believe the two man Galaga enhanced would be right up there if only for an honorable mention.

Pretty much have to say the Galaga Franchise has got to be my favorite.

Galaxian is for folks who actually have some gaming skills and like a challenge. Galaga is a game that people who aren't all that great at games love because it's easy and makes them feel like they are good at games. Most people aren't really that great at these games so more people love Galaga than Galaxian. Doesn't change the fact that Galaxian is a better game. Yes Galaga will always sell for more so you probably won't find anyone who will trade straight up.

And for those who doubt galaxian is harder the twin galaxies record is a little over 1 and a half million while the record for galaga is just shy of 16 million.

Wow...so you're basically saying that everyone who plays and likes Galaga absolutely sucks at video games and everyone who plays and likes Galaxian is the next Billy Mitchell? Really? Come on man! Could not disagree more.

Both games are challenging.Galaxian is just harder.Just because a game is harder than another doesn't make it a better game.I play and like both games, but I simply enjoy Galaga more. And considering Galaga is one of the most popular games ever, most people agree with me.

And if you want difficulty, play a few games of Sinistar.Compared to it,Galaxian's got nothing.

Because Galaxian is ASS compared to Galaga... Mod and some others here are absolutely brilliant to think otherwise.

Popular doesn't = better.

If you want a realistic explanation of which is a better game - more girls like Galaga. Why? Because it's easy to figure out and play. All of the most popular games were this way - Pac-Man, Frogger, etc. Games like Defender, Gravitar, Robotron, etc are more complicated and take more skill to excel. That doesn't make them a lesser game, but do make them less popular overall to the masses.

I personally think that if you're going to have a repetitive game like Galaga, Galaxian, Pac-Man, etc, then you need to add an element of difficulty to keep it interesting. Galaga's difficulty increase is way too low for the casual player. I suck at the game, almost never play it unless I'm fixing one, and I can still hit level 35 usually. Can't do that on Galaxian. Plus Galaxian has the better cabinet...

I prefer Galaga to Galaxian, but I am not really a fan of either game. I hate when games limit the rate of fire to one shot on the screen at a time (two at a time is only slightly better). There are plenty of other ways to increase difficulty in a game; having your rate of fire limited like that is just annoying. It makes the game feel sluggish and tedious.

The "fast shoot" hack of Galaga is the most enjoyable version IMO; but that's not saying much. Generally speaking, vertical shooters aren't really my thing (though I love Ikari Warriors; but that adds elements that most games in that category don't have).

Good to better direct sequels:
- Xevious to Xevious 3DG (awesome!)
- Berzerk to Frenzy
- Street Fighter to Street Fighter II
- Defender to Stargate
- Centipede to Millipede
- Asteroids to Blasteroids
- Sprint to Championship Sprint
- Bomberman to Atomic Punk/Bomberman II
- Atomic Punk/Bomberman II to Neo-Bomberman
- Mario Bros. to Super Mario Bros.

Good re-invents:
- Pacman to Ladybug
- Super Breakout to Arkanoid
- Amidar to Pepper II
- Monaco GP to Turbo
- Star Wars to Starblade

Good to bad, or VERY bad:
- Mappy to Hopping Mappy
- Street Fighter II to Street Fighter: The Movie
- Tetris to Dr. Mario
- And for the pile with the most steam coming off: Spy Hunter 2

I can't believe I'm the first one to post this!

Anything to Arkanoid!

:D

I forgot to mention (I think someone else mentioned):

Galaga88 > Galaga

I LOVE Galaga 88! It's one of the few games from that time period that I care about.

Hmmmm...

I didn't see that in your post, but ok. I'll take your word for it.

But my point was... ANYTHING to Arkanoid. (AKA the Borg.)

I'm just being a smart-ass :D, like most of my posts I've gone back a million times to edit/add things, I can't remember whether I mentioned it in the original posting or not.

It is a damn cool game, and one heck of a job taking a basic concept and running with it!

I like to enjoy each game in it's own unique context.

Never met a game that I didn't like.

Remember they are all excellent from the time when

everything was cool, unlike today.

I used to agree with:

Contra to Super Contra wasn't so good.

But then I started to play Super Contra more... and realized it's actually a more challenging game. Super Contra is also a better 2 player game. In Contra, your characters can get crowded when moving forward. I like them both equally. Contra was good because it was the original. Super Contra was good because it had better play dynamics and the enemies are not as predictable.

Just my 2 cents.

Galaxian better than Galaga?....No sir!

I can't think of just one of each category,so I'll do several...

Good to better:
Galaxian to Galaga
Tekken 1 to Tekken 2
Gradius to Lifeforce
Ghosts N' Goblins to Ghouls N' Ghosts
Darkstalkers to Nightwarriors

Good to worse
Q-Bert to Q-Bert's Qubes
Dig Dug to Dig Dug 2
DK jr or DK 2 to DK 3
Double Dragon 2 to DD 3
Contra to Super Contra
Time Pilot to Time Pilot 84
TMNT to TMNT:Turtles in Time

For me it has to be Q*bert ==> 7-Eleven Q*bert. MUCH better graphics, bonus intermission, ect <snark> :)
