best arcade game update/upgrade/remake/reinvent....

I just finished putting the street fighter 1 back together.. man, that game is horrible! SFII was an amazing improvement!!

Got me to think what was the best arcade game update/upgrade/remake/reinvent.... I would go with SF1=>SFII

Might as well include what was the worst.. I would go with Spyhunter => spyhunter II

Best: Ms. Pac-Man is MUCH better than Pac-Man.

Worst: Galaga is MUCH worse than Galaxian...

...Then how come I cant trade my Galaxian for a Galaga?! I would happily carry out that transaction! :D

Galaxian is for folks who actually have some gaming skills and like a challenge. Galaga is a game that people who aren't all that great at games love because it's easy and makes them feel like they are good at games. Most people aren't really that great at these games so more people love Galaga than Galaxian. Doesn't change the fact that Galaxian is a better game. Yes Galaga will always sell for more so you probably won't find anyone who will trade straight up.

And for those who doubt galaxian is harder the twin galaxies record is a little over 1 and a half million while the record for galaga is just shy of 16 million.

Galaxian better than Galaga?....No sir!

I can't think of just one of each category,so I'll do several...

Good to better:
Galaxian to Galaga
Tekken 1 to Tekken 2
Gradius to Lifeforce
Ghosts N' Goblins to Ghouls N' Ghosts
Darkstalkers to Nightwarriors

Good to worse
Q-Bert to Q-Bert's Qubes
Dig Dug to Dig Dug 2
DK jr or DK 2 to DK 3
Double Dragon 2 to DD 3
Contra to Super Contra
Time Pilot to Time Pilot 84
TMNT to TMNT:Turtles in Time

That's not really a fair comparison, as Galaxian scores alot lower. If you compare the tournament scores of Galaga (5 ships at 3.2 mil) and Galaxian (4 ships at 1.6 mil) they're alot closer, considering the higher scoring rate of Galaga. Now you want a good upgrade/update? Try Galaga 3/Gaplus and compare that to Galaga :)

That being said, the guy who has the Galaxian record is a friend of mine, and is unbelievable at the game. While we both were at Funspot back in 2008, I heard the Galaxian game from the next row over, told my brother "sounds like Aart's playing". He says "how can you tell by just hearing it?" I said "he never misses" :D

Double Dragon 3 is a pile for sure. I own all three games and never played the 3rd one in the arcade which I am glad I didn't. The controls suck, bosses are cheap(especially the last one) and having to actually buy special moves is a joke. Spyhunter 2 just destroyed everything I loved about the first game. :(

Not sure if this counts since they were made by two different companies, but Golden Tee II to Golden Tee 3D.

Worst--probably Spy Hunter series.

I think Asteroids Deluxe was an upgrade over Asteroids. A lot harder to play but mainly it's an upgrade in the looks department. The 3d effect in an Asteroids Deluxe makes it one of, if not the best looking B&W game ever made.

Worst could be the Joust to Joust 2.

Donkey Kong or Donkey Kong Jr. like both games, but would have to go with DKJ as the better game. Donkey Kong 3 is another story, though.

Worst:
Joust=>Joust2
Pacman=>Super Pacman

Best:
Defender=>Stargate
1942=>1943
Pacman=>Ms Pacman
Robotron=>SmashTV

I've never really considered the Galaxian=>Galaga=>Galaga3 in a better/worse context. I like all three.

On the other hand, not being a big button mashing martial arts fighter game fan, the progression of I=>II=>n of any of those games is a big meh!

I expect major heat from this but IMO Stargate is the greatest Arcade game ever made and Defender was an awesome game to start with. I just can't think of a game with better explosions, sounds and overall intensity of gameplay. Stargate is NOT Defender with "an extra button"!!!

SF1 is pretty much unplayable . I've beaten the game a few times though , all you do is keep rotating the joystick for a fireball and start mashing the buttons and pray fireballs come out , which they do randomly , and thats it . Its one of the worst games ever made .

Count me in with the Galaxian is better club !

For me:

worst:
joust->joust 2
pac-man->super pac

best:
defender->stargate (so much that I'm tempted to try to trade my Defender for a stargate)
asteroids->asteroids deluxe (mostly cab design)

I don't agree with robotron->smashtv being qn upgrade. I love both, but robotronis one of the best games ever made.

Also, ms. Pac isn't strictly better than pac. I prefer the audio in pac. Tempted to make a hack that is ms pac with pac audio
