Fighting games have too many buttons. Give me Karate Champ.
That's also why I suck at Defender.
Some people are so good at button mashing it might as well be one button lol....ever see the skilled player get they ass whooped by the button masher? Pretty good stuff lol.

There is no contest. ANY iteration of Street Fighter 2 wins. While Mortal Kombat is a good game and has it's place, it holds no candle to Street Fighter 2 .Seriously... entering any arcade in the early 90s and hearing "hadoken!!" at full volume. You couldn't escape it. Mortal Kombat had the novelty as a game with graphic violence and digitized graphics, and while I do love the game(s) and appreciate it for what it is, it just doesn't compare. As an approachable game, Street Fighter 2 wins hands down. Even on a technical standpoint, SF2 (with the exception of SSF2T) is far better as the average Joe can get past the first few CPU opponents by mashing and without knowing how the AI operates.

For 1990s fighters, then Street Fighter II is the king.

As an adult, I have grown to appreciate the Street Fighter Franchise. SFIII 2nd impact is probably my fav out of all of them. However, as a kid I thought that Street Fighter II was an example of how companies would milk a product to the point that you got sick of it. I mean, I do appreciate the significance, but there are SO many versions of Street Fighter II out there. Both official and unofficial. Mortal Kombat II and Killer Instinct were refreshing to see. Especially the MK series with an actual button to block. Brilliant.

The Capcom SFII legacy reminds me of:
1) Nintendo Gameboy - I remember as a kid seeing numerous iterations of the Gameboy and thinking, "Cool! What's new?!" And then being disappointed that it was basically the same, just a slight tweak as a money grab. (Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Light, Gameboy Color, Sheesh!)
2) Lucasarts with the original Star Wars trilogy home videos - Don't get me started. Too many re-releases of the same original trilogy in a "new and better" format. More money grabbing by companies. (Star Wars Trilogy, Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition, Star Wars Trilogy Limited Edition "unaltered", Star Wars Trilogy unofficial "Despecialized" edition.)

So yeah, again, I've appreciate the Street Fighter series and like playing them (and watching high level players compete, OMG - Diago Parry anyone?

But for me, ultimately, Mortal Kombat II and above ruled (except for MK4, LOL)

Nope, never have. That's like saying some random who barely knows what the pieces do can beat a grandmaster in chess.

On a game like KI, you can really make your gameplay as simple or as complicated as you like.....Sometimes going real technical trying to pull of some really fancy moves/combos doesn't beat the reflexes(and luck!) of someone mashing a bunch of shit....Back in my college days, the closest I ever found someone to my level on KI was a buddy of mine......man we used to have some serious KI matches on the SNES and we would all play....this was my dorm days....people got to where they wouldn't even play me any more because I was such a ruthless asshole on the game so I would sit games out and others would play...my wife(then girlfriend since HS) would play my buddy and just mash a bunch of shit and he'd be all trying to be super skilled and she would really whoop his ass sometimes...he would get a little pissed lol...he was really good too(best player beside myself I ever played)....but Orchid has that reach in her punches and kicks and just wack the guy over the head.....skilled button mashing is what I called it. :ROFLMAO:

KI is a great game, but if you put two top level players on it against each other, it is the most boring thing ever. When Eddie and I used to play this at our peak, no one could do combos on each other because we knew how to break them all so the matches became a nickel and dime fest of us hitting each other with single hits, usually the light attacks. It was when we reached that point that we stopped playing the game completely.

I'm obviously a bit biased, but MK2 and MK3/UMK3 are my tops. SF2 in its many variations and the alpha series were pretty great too and despite how boring it became once we mastered every nuance of it, KI was a great one too. I never really liked KI2 much.

I can see that.

I had the privilege of playing KI against one of the actual game testers, and even though I completely got my butt handed to me, I must say it was extremely entertaining to watch 🙂.

Hmm....some combos are not breakable.....and the guard battle(low hit press release openers vs. overhead attacks) are quite awesome....single hits ARE part of the strategy and part of what makes it great....I never had a problem with things being too breakable....sure we knew combo breakers(stick with KI 1 if you find things are too breakable in KI 2 but it applies there too to an extent) but if you play smart you can pull of plenty if you switch your auto doubles/openers.....just have to switch it up...press release speeds the combos up too....My buddy and I were VERY good and that never happened with us.

This is a very tough question to answer, and "best" means different things for various reasons.

My all time favorite would PROBABLY be Killer Instinct 1. I still remember how disappointed I was when Nintendo 64 came out and they had canceled it. KI1 is the reason I bought an arcade cabinet though. I found a KI2 cab local in like 2001 or 2002 for $300 at a Timeout arcade. After I got it, I got KI1, MK1, and MK2 for it.

I loved everything about KI. The combos were incredible. The sound. The graphics. EVERYTHING. Back then I wasn't super competitive in fighting games and I would crush everyone I played at that game.

However that game has aged very poorly. Now a days I play current fighters competitively, and KI is just not a "good" fighter in the competitive sense. So I can't call it the "best" in the competitive sense.

I don't think the older MK games are good in that sense too, although I love MK2 and love playing it. I also love Street Fighter 2 Hyper Edition (Turbo on SNES). That is an actual good competitive fighter compared to anything else back in the day. MK1 also holds a place in my heart and I still love playing it, but the game is super janky. I loved me some Tekken too up until around Tekken Tag, when everything just felt the same in the sequels.

Now a days all I play is Street Fighter 6 and I play it pretty much daily and am pretty competitive in it. It's by far my favorite overall game right now and has been since it's release over 2 years ago.
