Surely this will be a very divisive argument, since there have been so many different types of fighting games released in arcades. But of all of them, which one would you say was the best in your opinion?

For me personally it's Street Fighter III: Third Strike. It's not only a great playing game but a great looking one with incredible music. Gigas Breaker is one of the most satisfying special moves in any video game ever. I'm surprised it flopped in arcades, especially since it's gained a cult following.

Street fighter alpha was the only one I could kick ass at in the arcade against the computer. I could get to Akuma regularly with Ken on a quarter.

So that's the best one fir me!

Street Fighter 2
SF2 CE
SF2 Hyper Fighting

Solid nod to the first three Mortal Kombats. But to me, the control and fluidness of SF2 is why it's the greatest.

Karate Champ is also up there.

As far as side scrollers, Final Fight is the best beat 'em up.

Was more my college years.....but, IMO Killer Instinct(1) is the King....it's the amalgamation of what came before it as far as fighters was concerned, super enhanced and groundbreaking with new amazing combos, you could really have your own style of combat.... and it was the best IMO.,...you can really get deep in the weeds of strategy and quickness/skill...using press release to start combos with regular hits instead of just openers....I was fully versed in SF and MK........Darkstalkers should get some love too....but yeah....KI is the King....and is the only 90's game that will be in my lineup.

SF2:HF

SF3 took too long to come out and the SF franchise was so saturated with different editions and spin offs (alpha) that the magic was gone. Add to the fact that the roster lacked everybody we knew sans Ryu and Ken and it was doomed. While 3rd strike is highly regarded now, it came out 2 years after new generation and the damage was done.

3D fighters didn't help either

I hate fighting games. I suck at them so hard.

That said, MKII. It's managed to cling on in my collection for years. I don't play it often, if ever, but I respect it.
