Best and worst console games you've ever played?

I still have a copy of Megaman, didn't have it as a kid, bought it as a teen at Funcoland. You have to admit that cover was gaybob 5000 - you'd think George Michael would come out of that box and try to stick a finger in your butt. lol.
I never would have thought that, you got a secret you wanna share?

Here's a totally unrelated factoid for you guys - I just kicked myself in the nuts tonight when I thought of it. I bought 2 of the top loader NES consoles from Kay-Bee Toys on clearence in middle school for $30 a piece - Both are long gone, one I actually gave to my cousin - I remember how they had the big $30 sale tag hanging on the stack - I should have bought every one of those bastards and threw them in the closet. lol A case pack of top-loaders would be worth a fortune.
Depends on what you consider a fortune.

Wjat? Mortal Kombat on the SNES was awesome. It had 10X better graphics and gameplay then the Sega Genesis version. It played very much like the original arcade game. Only thing missing was the violence.

No violence=Bad

I had the Sega CD version at the time which was better.

Best NES - Little League World Championship Series

Worst NES - Day's of Thunder! I thought it would be awesome like the movie.. total fail!!

I logged like 60+ hours on that game, pretty sure I still have the save file on a memory card. It wasn't that bad.

I'm pretty surprised to see Beyond the Beyond listed as well. I really enjoyed it, though I wouldn't say it held a candle to the Playstation's post-1997 RPG lineup.

As for me, the best console exclusive games I've probably played would be...

Streets of Rage 2
Shining Force II
Maniac Mansion
Shadowgate
Resident Evil 2

Some of the worst abominations in gaming...

Superman 64
Daikatana
E.T.
Karate Kid

As a young adult I bought the japanese import of Macross digital mission VFX. Paid over $100 to have it the day after release in japan. Biggest let down ever since I was a huge fan of Robotech/Macross anime

Best game list is missing:
Super Mario Kart
Street Fighter 2 (many good ports)
Samba De Amigo
Bomberman (any 4+ player version)
Dracula X (PC engine)
Pikmin (highly under rated)
Secret of Mana
Chrono Trigger
Earthworm Jim

Over 10 years ago when I worked at EA there was this guy that one day went on a rant about how he was a big gamer even though no one gave him any gamer props. An old school EA producer continued to taunt and haze him. I got them both to agree to a multi week challenge of games where they had to go head to head on a secret number of games to win each round in a vs style setup. I brainstormed with others to produce this list. Each week was a secret.

Wipeout XL linked
Super Bomberman
Puzzle Bobble
Street Fighter 2 HF on arcade sticks
Samba De Amigo maracas and everything. (one guy was mexican and one guy was gay)
Quake Deathmatch DM6

Some of my best memories of working at EA...

Worst: Bubsy

I know a lot of people didn't like Bubsy, but I'd say it's far from the worst game on the system. I played the hell out of it and I enjoyed watching that smart ass cat get killed. Now, Bubsy for the PS1 could be pretty close to the worst on that system...

NES=Total Recall hands down. OMG this game was a pile.

And just what the hell was wrong with Ghostbusters for the 2600? I still have that game with the manual in the original box. Sure it wasn't the greatest game for the 2600(Pitfall 2 takes that title) but it had great music for a 2600 game and the game play was pretty good instead of the same old repeating level every 2 minutes.

I actually can't remember too many of the bad ones, I do remember renting Flicky for the Genesis on a dare, man that was bad.

Some of the highlights include:

NES:

Mario 3
Super Dodge Ball
Blades of Steel

SNES:

Mario Kart
Jurassic Park
Street Fighter 2 Turbo
NBA Jam

PSX:

Resident Evil 2

PS2:

Socom 1 & 2
NFS Underground
Tony Hawk 4
GTA San Andreas

360:

Modern Warfare
Rainbow Six Vegas

Yeah I know, but it's the worst one I actually played. Wayne's World, Mario Paint, Mario Is Missing, Shaq Fu and Revolution X all looked really bad, but I never actually played any of them. I unfortunately played Bubsy. But I enjoyed Clayfighter more than Bubsy, and that was pretty awful.

Ah,this smells of awesome thread! I remember Time Lord and Hydlide for the NES being pretty crappy as well. I guess I've played a lot of crappy games.

I remember shortly after I got a 2600, my mom took me to Toys R Us to pick out a game and Ghostbusters was what I picked out. I think I even used christmas/birthday money I'd saved up to buy it. I don't recall how old I was, but I was under 10, I know that much.

Man, what a fucking let down. My first buyer's remorse. Pretty sure it was about $50 or so - does that sound right for when those were still sold in stores?

Yeah - I'm pretty sure they were $40 or $50 - If I remember correctly though Atari games dropped in price quicker than other consoles have since. Ghostbusters is the only ORIGINAL cardboard game box I still have, my copy was $29.99 at AMES - LOL

That's definitely my first buyer's remorse (I was gifted it)- I felt horrible. The box was rad, got it home, opened it, slapped it in. OK - I hear the GB theme - sweet - then fuck now what? - Wait you mean - Oh - oh hold on - oh shit - this is fucking stupid. Hit the power button. I'm pretty sure my parents knew immediately that it sucked and that they'd just wasted their money.

Anyone ever had their buyer's remorse turn around?

I remember when I was given Thunder Castle for the Intellivision as a present... I hated it at first! Some of the levels were very difficult, it was really easy to get trapped, and it was very hard to power up to defeat the enemies. I felt really bad that I'd been given a bad game, because Intellivision cartridges were very exepnsive here BITD.

Then a game store here had a competition for the highest score on that game, which encouraged me to play it more. The more I played it, the better I got at it, and the more I enjoyed it, until I ended up really liking it. I didn't win the competition, but I didn't feel so bad anymore.

My favorite console games of all time are the KING'S FIELD series from From Software (who are now in vogue thanks to Demon's Souls). I consider the "King's Field Universe" to encapsulate the following games, each of which I love dearly. They are:

King's Field (jp) (PSX)
King's Field (usa) (PSX)
King's Field II (usa) (PSX)
King's Field: The Ancient City (PS2)
Eternal Ring (PS2)
Shadow Tower (PSX)
Shadow Tower: Abyss (PS2)
KF Additional I + II (psp)

Shadow Tower Abyss was the capstone in the series and a marvelous game that pushed the limits of the PS2. It is criminal that SCEA blocked its release in North America. Also Echo Night and Echo Night Beyond I would call 2nd or 3rd cousins to this series.

Some of my other favorite console games include:
(alphabetical)

Akumajo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo (Turbo Duo)
Alien Vs Predator (Atari Jaguar)
Decapattack (Genesis)
Devil's Crush (Turbografx-16)
Dungeons & Dragons: Order of the Griffon (Turbografx-16)
Highlander: Last of the MacLeods (Atari Jaguar CD)
Lords of Thunder (Turbo Duo)
Ninja Gaiden (NES)
Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection (PS3)
Resident Evil 4 (PS2)
SMT: Digital Devil Saga (PS2)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis)
Space Griffon VF-9 (PSX)
Splatterhouse (Turbografx-16)
Tetris Attack (SNES)
Wipeout 3 (PSX)
Wizards & Warriors (NES)

I enjoyed Time Lord. I actually beat it a few months ago for the first time ever. Good game that takes a little skill to finish, you just can't run though it. I wouldn't call it crappy. Hydlide on the NES on the other hand is kinda crappy. But Super Hydlide on the Sega Genesis was one of my favourite games back in the day, I played it tons. It had awesome music as well.

Hmm...well those were my childhood impressions of those two games. I guess I should go revisit them and see if my opinions have changed.
