Berzerk

Real nice work on that restoration. Taking an almost beyond repair cab like what you started with, especially Berzerk, and ending up with the finished product takes a tremendous amount of time and work. Congrats on a super job. Now you can start going for the high score.

Thanks!!! I've been out sick for about 4 days... So I haven't had time to absolutely finish this thing... I'm waiting on some new slide bolts for the door... then I will be done done!

Got the door hardware figured out...

Ok... so I modified the cab from its original design... some may like it some may not... I happen to like the clean look of the front and that lever-latch-thingie-on-a-spring was just poo...

So I decided to use a standard 2" surface slide bolt...

... mounted on the door:

... with the bolt fully extended it will not actually hit the finished surface so if its left in the engaged position and the door is accidentally slammed it wont hurt a thing!

...here is the little catch for the bolt

...view from the inside.

It holds it nice and tight... I'm going to put a small strip of 1/4" single sided foam tape around the door frame (on the door not the cab) to give it a nice soft fit.

Still have to finish the door it has the old crappy finish on it... and THAT WILL BE IT FOR BERZERK! YAY!!!!

Really, top-notch work, RETRO.

Here is a question...where did you get the mark-free black-oxide carriage bolts (the ones on the sides of the cab)? And are they 1/4 - 24 size?

Thanks!!

...its the little things.

I really like the slide bolt for the door... but I really really hate the polished brass finish.. even if its on the inside... it just isn't right!

So I ordered a brushed nickel version of the same piece.. :)

First let me say.. Amazing Job! retroACTIVE

Just as nice as the gorf if not better:) This thread is going to be my
guidebook when restoring mine to factory new. I like the non-sandy
finish as well. The templates will stick much better and the side art
will look nicer.

So slightly offtopic.. As many of you know I am jumping into the
arcade art reproduction biz. Multi-williams and Burgertime (in progress)
so far. I've decided to reproduce Berzerk Bezels and Marquees.. silkscreened
on glass like the originals. I have completed the vectorization process but
before I send the Bezel out to make films I just wanted some Berzerk owner opinions..

The normal Berzerk bezel has a window where you can stick a sheet of
paper with typed Game information. These always yellow over time.

Should I reproduce the bezels with a window OR
Fill it in with the standard Berzerk text with a white background silkscreened on.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Malice95

Thanks! I really enjoyed this particular restore... I've yet to post the money shot pics...

I like the window per the original design... for two reasons...

1. It's original
2. I have a ZZPU so I'd like to print a custom instruction card for that functionality.

A while ago I started a bezel interest thread and the consensus was that these would be good to get reprod:

Okay I can appriciate that.. I also just bought a ZZPU from Mark so
having some custom text saying press P1 & P2 to play Frenzy
would be smart.

Anyone else have any strong opinions one way or another?

So far I am leaning toward having a window.

I know there is plenty of interest out there. They have never been done
as far as I am aware. I ran it past Chris M. to make sure he wasnt working on it.. He hadn't started on it so I am going to run with it.

Expect a repro bezel & marquee in the June timeframe.

Thanks,
Mike

As much as I would like to say make the instructions part of the bezel, retro does bring up point for those who have the berzerk/frenzy board. Plus, the window IS original, so I vote go with the window.

I am in the process of gutting my Berzerk to begin working on the cabinet.

I noticed when I pulled out the speaker it says 6.4 OHM. I assume that
means 6" 4 ohm.

Where did you find a replacement speaker?

Thanks,
Mike

Yeah I suppose so... I looked at it as straight up 6.4Ohm... and it seemed odd to me but I didn't over think it... this is the one I got... and it fits:

Its actually 6 1/4" spacing on the mounting holes... so a 6" would be too small.

Just got word from the powder coating shop, all of my retouches are done!!! I should be able to start putting this back together!!!!

So I pulled off all my berzerk hardware today.

You powder coatred the marquee rails and the coin door I assume.

What PC finish did you use? Did you strip all the paint or did they?
Sandblasted as well? I assume you took all the parts off the
coin door first.

What did it end up costing if you dont mind me asking? I wanna
get a rough idea what I should pay.

Thanks,
Malice

Yup... I had lots of stuff coated... beyond this particular cab... on that batch I had:

4 coin doors done (Galaga, Space Invaders, Berzerk and APB)
2 sets of marquee brackets (Galaga, Berzerk)
1 Atari Power block frame
1 Berzerk speaker grille
1 Berzerk door hinge
1 Galaga Control Panel
1 APB seat frame
2 APB louver vents

All together with 4 different finishes (Textured, Gloss, Gold and Gray) I paid 150 bucks.

They f'd up my Galaga coin door so next time I'm not bringing that much crap all at once. They made it right but it was a pain in the but to deal with. Having to re-heat the pieces to fix the finish doesn't work well (at least not for them). Thank goodness the Berzerk stuff came out good!

They sand blast and do a zinc primer... so there is no work on my part... I just drop of the ol' crappy stuff and it comes back looking like new (mostly).

I will never paint a coin door... Primarily because I don't have a sand blaster... so the tedium of stripping it would just piss me off. The pc finish is very tough and it is conformally coated throughout all the nooks and crannies of the frame.. something difficult to do with a rattle can. Don't get me wrong, a rattle can job can look fantastic I just choose not to bother. By the time I get to the coin door I want it to be over... so this works for me :)

Sweet, thanks for the info on the powder coating. I too HATE doing the coin doors.

Is it mainly automotive places that power coat?

No prob... yep from what I've found in my area they are part of some automotive shop. Also, for me, the cost goes up if you want multiple colors or special order colors. Satin and gloss black are common and always in stock so its best to go that route when possible. I tried the textured stuff on this because I wanted it to look tougher... I liked the results but probably won't bother with that powder again because its tricky with complicated pieces.

I vote for "with window".
