Berzerk

So the goal here was to repaint without trying to replicate the factory textured (sloppy) finish, intended to mask inferior quality wood and assembly?

I'm seriously considering sanding mine down and respraying it smooth if I do it.

Yes ... Love Berzerk... Detest the cab... I just couldn't muster the ambition to replicate that textured finish.. I prefer a cleaner finish and think the stencil and bezel will look better with a clean cut cab.

I'm usually a stickler for it looking original, but I can't disagree and will probably do the same. On the sides of mine, the paint doesn't seem evenly textured, doesn't have the sandy finish, but is more like if someone brushed the paint on. The front panel does have the sandy texture, but it looks bad.

I also noticed that on mine - on the front t-molding on one side, about even with the coin door, the t-molding slot is 1/16" or so off center, so that the t-molding overhangs one side and misses the other. If I do a cabinet restoration, I'll have to fill and recut the slot. It's as if they tried to build a sloppy cabinet...

I had the exact same issue with the t-molding slot, also the profile around the monitor area was so fouled up from a bad cutting bit, I copied the profile from another clean Berzerk and re-cut this one to make it right. I also put t-molding around the whole thing to keep it clean and uniform. I'm going to use a different latch on the front door to eliminate those ugly bolts... If I had a good solution for eliminating the side bolts I would have done that too!

I look forward to seeing these Berzerk restoration results.

Another thing I noticed on mine is that the back door, while flush on one side, sits 1/8" or so in on the other side. I guess there are enough cabinet slop issues to fix to make a repaint worthwhile.

There's been some more chatter recently about the original style bat stick being reproduced. I really look forward to starting my restoration, probably next year some time.

I think we have the same cab! I had to reposition the 1x1/4" slats so the door would fit right! I reglued and stapled them... There are just so many things I did to straighten, strengthen and correct on this beast... unfortunately I didn't take enough photos to show that off... hence why it has taken me this long to just get here!

I am looking forward to the bat stick project completing... I'm putting a perfect 360 in ther in the mean time.

Maybe stenciling tomorrow :)

Was able to get it stenciled!!!!

It's on there pretty thick... I happen to like that effect. The cab is matte black with a glossy stencil and it looks really really sharp. This was my second set of stencils from gamestencils... Defender was my first and like Defender, they are really great. The only issue I had with these is that they had been sitting around for about a year and I didn't lay them flat first so it was tricky getting them on there. There are a few goofs but what I find with stenciling is that you don't really pay attention to those little goofs... once all of the masking is removed and the cab is populated all of the little "problems" fade and it just looks fantastic!!!!

Almost ready to bring this bad boy down to the game room and fill it up with its guts !!!!

space invaders is next...

Thanks folks... I've brought it in the house and begun putting on the tmolding... this is the fun part... I still need to cut and drill a new wooden backing for clnmoore's new CPO and unfortunately I forgot to finish the front door!!!! so I still need to hit that a few times with black.

Nice work Jim! Did you roll the paint on and what kind of primer/paint are you using?

Thanks...

I rolled it with Rustoleum satin black, thinned with acetone and I use no primer. I've given up on primer, I don't really see a purpose for it when using several coats of oil based paint. I usually do 6 really thin coats of black. First 3 coats are sanded with 320 between, next 2 are sanded with 400 and the last sanding is done with 600 before the final top coat. Also, I didn't sand this thing bare... the original paint was so dang hard that it held the surface of the plywood together extremely well.

Nice work! It's coming along really well.

I'm wondering, are you planning on clear-coating it for the additional protection? Might be worth it.

You know I've not really been into the clear coat thing... I really like the way the cab looks and I am apprehensive about my capabilities with clear-coating. If I could take it somewhere and have it done I would. I stenciled my defender and didn't clear coat, it still looks fantastic and the finish is as tough as heck.

This guy does all this work on restoring a cab, yet he votes for Robotron over Berzerk.. Does that call for prescription meds? ;)

Glad to see another Berzerk being restored. Your cab looks as bad as mine. Was yours a conversion? Mine was, and they painted over the 'berzerk' on the sides but left the robots on.

Hmm, mine also has no BERZERK written above the Robots.. Is everyone sure it's supposed to be there? Or was there maybe a variant??

I have never heard of it not being there. All Berzerk cabinets that I have ever seen had the Berzerk logo above the robots.

I'll check mine when I get home but I'm pretty sure it's not there. Then again, mine was man-handled by the following KLOVers before it came to me so........

JBuck, Franklin, Parabolic, Bryan5502, and DJ_DNS :D
