Retired KLOV'r Scootermike gave me his Berzerk today. It was sitting outside under a tarp with some other games. Costmetically it's not bad. Needs a little work on the bottom.

The game was modified at some point to play both Frenzy and Berzerk. This was before the Spaeth mod and there are actually two complete boardsets in there. There is a circuit board which switches between the games when you press a button which activates a switch. I have no clue how this hack was put together and have never worked on a Berzerk.

Anyway, surprise, neither game works. I think the frenzy has garbled junk on the screen and the Berzerk is blank. I noticed a red light on the boards - on the Frenzy it blinks three times at power up and occassionally it stays lit but usually it's dark. The light on the Berzek board is always dark. I hear no game sounds.

Any ideas on where to start? I tried checking the +5 voltage at TP4 but got a reading of 0 on both boards which seems really odd since one at least is garbled.

Thanks.

I took the boardsets out of the cabinet last night to take a look at them.

White Nicad batteries were used, no leaks. Seems like the battery holder is very flimsy. I guess I should replace these batteries.

There was a lot of really weird wiring done in order to make the game switchable between the boards. There are stickers on the boards which indicate the last repair was done in 1997.

The Frenzy CPU light blinks three times and that's it. The Berzerk CPU light doesn't go on at all. I swapped out the CPUs between the two boardsets to see what happens. Didn't have time to finish putting it back together.

It's a start.
