Well, with a little help from Phet (seeing his restoration post) and a lot of help from prok (gamestencils.com) I am finishing up a Berzerk restoration.

I picked up this game local (thanks Todd) and fixed a few issues with it. The CP wiring needed to be gone through (loose connections at the molex) and the video pcb needed to be gone over for cold solder joints. Originally, the monitor was out of sync for about 20-40 seconds, then came together. Easy fixes.

This is what it looked like to start, decent shape. Typical bondo work needed at the bottom of the cab, holes filled, etc. Artwork was good. The new CP is coming soon! :)

Had to PM prok in regards to the stencils. I layed them out and didn't see the red stencil for the Berzerk logo on the sides! I never claimed to be a bright man, prok explained that they were 2n1 stencils that once you painted the blue, you remove a few pieces of the stencil, then cover the blue, and bingo! There you go. Glad I have no pride in asking questions! Thanks for the quick response!

I ended up using a light primer to make the blue and red pop. It worked well. Sanded lightly between the primer and the colors.

The blue goes on first. I used a rustoleum rattle can for this -(also with the primer) -

Now for the red stencils!

As you can see in the pic, the blue boxes are used to line the stencils up perfectly! Excellent quality stencils!!!

Now, I should have the coin door and other metal parts finished with powercoating by early next week.

Just a quick thanks to all that gave the advice here on KLOV. It's turning out pretty good!

Going to try out the Taito stencils over the next few weeks....:D

The blue was a Gloss Enamel, Rustolleum, Sail Blue.
The red was a Gloss Enamel, Rustolleum, Sunrise Red.
Both were found at Home Depot.

Looks great! This will be my next game. I only have room for one more and Berzerk is it. Did you texture the paint or apply it flat? As far as the black goes- is flat or satin? Did you primer the cab or just apply the paint to the wood?

The cab was already textured. It did not need to be knocked down to bare wood and start 100% over. I filled and bondo'd the holes and cab defects (base) and sanded the entire cab lightly before applying a primer, then the base black coat.

Still has the original texture.

OK good to know. I noticed that there were a few good dings near the bottom, what about the texture in the areas you bondo-ed? Sorry about the questions, but I'm taking notes for future reference.

Yes. There is a sand additive that you can get, and was used. PITA!

It did blend the whole cab together, however, it took a lot more time than normal.

Looks good. I love the way those red and blue robots look together. This stencil was a bit more of a pain in the ass than the others I've used. The texture part sucked too. I'm glad I have a restored Berzerk, because I'd never do another one. Those rattle cans were a pretty dead on match, I was shocked when I used them and they came out that close. Did you roll your base coat? You must have if you used the sand texture. Gonna clearcoat it? I did:

No offense Phet, but that clear-coat killed it for me. It's way too shiny. Berzerk is supposed to look "dull".

Please take down all those great looking pics though, makes me want to order another stencil set..... ;)

@Krajkerjac what are the horizontal lines above the robots ? Are those spills ? If so how did that happen (so I can prevent it _if_ I ever get around to go stenciling cabs)

Yes. Had to roll the base coat. With the satin finish, you cannot see any roller marks. Takes a little time as you know....

The horizontal lines above the robots were from the tape that I used. I ended up retouching the black base coat due to a little overspray and removal of the "lineup" boxes seen.

ANd thanks Phet for the advise. It turned out good! Now to put it all together when the powdercoating is completed this week...pics to follow when done.

Mine looked like shit until I clear coated it. To each his own though. The originality was already lost to me when I noticed there was no blue overspray on my repaint like the original had (which made it look like the blue was glowing). Once I realized that was gone, I just wanted it to look good. I think the sheen just looks shinier in the pics where the light is reflecting off the sides. It's actually a satin finish.

Well that's certainly true: if there's any small over-sprays, leave it like that because it looks more original. Stern's painting jobs were crap. I'd honestly would even slightly mis-allign the stencils on purpose because that's what Stern did too ;)

If you look at my Berzerk logo, it's just amazing how poor they worked.

Well there's always a trade-off when restoring artwork. Are the colors 100% ? You never know because HOW did those colors look 30 years ago ?

You did a good job Phet it looks a ton better than how it was before, and I know that pictures can often show things you don't see in real life, like shiny reflections...
