Ok I just got past the 5 beep problem. Stuck gate.

Now the game boots, and I'm able to play. Couple of issues though.

1. I'm getting odd characters in the default high-scores. corupt rom? Also I don't currently have a battery in it. Will that create a problem other than not saving scores?

Also have letters and #'s in the book keeping area.

Lastly, it appears I don't have voices. Is there a TS guide avail for the voice board?

Cable checks good, sockets check good.

Thanks

When mine had no battery, I got some nonsense letters on the high score screen as well. They were gone after installing the highscore kit.

Don't know about the voice board. But doesn't it have some dip switches? Also, I have tested a spare voice board that outputs lower sound than the one in the cab. Maybe bad caps have something to do with sound output from this board.

Well we are back to not booting. I get five beeps, and it stops.

I've been going over the docs, and using the logic probe, but so far I haven't come up with a reason why it stops yet..

ugh

How are the interconnect cables?
Also try cleaning the header pins that the cables connect to.

Surprisingly, this board set is very clean. No acid damage, and the legs on the chips look great. I've gone over the interconnect cables, and ohm'd them out, they are all making good connections.

Just going to take me a while longer. Having to look up truth tables for each chip, and check the signals ugh..

Darn you Chip #9b

Seems the little bugger decided to stop multiplexing. I was able to check it at work today. Figured since I had to work on Thanksgiving, that I could at least work on my boards. So I found the little sucker that I hope was causing my POST to stop on the 5th beep. Won't know for sure for another 4 hours. Argg..

I did get a chance to look at the VSU board too.. Since I didn't have any voices in game. I found a dead timer chip. So maybe I'll get lucky and everything will be back to normal when I get everything plugged in??

Fingers crossed anyways.

Well got everything plugged in, and partial success. I'm now up to six beeps.

Replaced the sockets for 12c, and 10c. and checked those chips while I was at. Checked good. I had already checked 5c, moved on to 12a, and 12b. Those check good too. 6b flip flop is good, and the gates going to and from 5g and 1h to 6b check good.

I've also ohmd out every trace for each of those chips. ugh.. all good.

One thing I did notice was there were some traces coming and going from 5F that don't match the schematics.

Anyways I got to think maybe I'm interpting the beep/flash thing wrong??

I get 6 beeps, and flashes. Does that mean it passed the 6th test, and the problem is with the 7th?

What still boggles me, is the fact that I actually got the game to run in the first place. I must have tripped something when checking logic lines with my probe.. :(

Ahh.. Finally found one last flaky ls74, swapped it with a 5474 and it works much better. I also managed to get the voice board working.

Question about the voice, it has a slight pop right as something is said. I assume this is probably normal. But would like to know what yours does.

So now I'm back to the hex garbage in the book keeping, and highscore areas. Seems going through and doing a full book keeping clear took care of the garbage, and we are good to go. Now to find the correct joystick.

Yeah. Is it replacing words? I thought I heard "Intruder chicken" rather than "Intruder alert"? I thought I heard some other odd combinations in there as well.

Yeah it's swapping words. "Intruder Chicken" "Coin Like in Pocket" etc.. All the words seem to be there, they are just being played in the wrong order. Turns out it was a bad flip flop mc14174, @ b5, replaced it with a 74174 and we are all good..

Sweet sounds on this game..
