Okay, I have a Berzerk cab that's running Frenzy. I want to change it back to a Berzerk.

My question is this: Looking like this is not a simple ROM swap like I thought it was, no? From Wikipedia:

"Stern later released a similar game called Frenzy as a sequel, and a Berzerk coin-op can be converted to Frenzy simply by replacing one processor (ZPU-1000 to ZPU-1001) and installing a different game ROM."

Now, the ZPU-1000 is the BOARD name and not just the processor name, right? This would take a ZPU-1000 board as I have a ZPU-1001 board in it right now.

Then, there's this, that makes it look like it would just be a ROM swap on either a 1000 or 1001 board:

Does anyone know here for sure?

TIA!

As far as I know it's more than a rom swap. I thought it was the board. My recommendation would be to buy Spaethe's ZZPU that plays both. I saw Malice95s machine that had it and that was enough for me.

The board swap may be simple, but getting Spaeth to reply to your emails and sell you stuff is not. Emailed him about a Warlords HSS about a week ago now, no reply at all.

Yeah, that and I'm not looking to swap boards if that is at all avoidable. still hoping for a definitive answer on ROM swap before I drop $$$ on ROMs.

Well, gonna go for it with the ZPU-1001 board I have. Got some Berzerk ROMs on the way. We'll know for sure soon enough!

Got a nice set of well packaged, professionally labeled ROMs from hobbyroms.com (thx, Steph. Nicely done.)

Now, I had to figure out which chips went where since the boards are laid out a bit different as far as ROM placement.

Gave it a shot based on this:

And it was a no-go. Then tried the logical approach of ROM1 slot with the lowest # Berzerk ROM - same thing.

So, I'll put this myth as BUSTED. :D

NOOOOOOOO!!!! Yeah I figured as much, also I think I know why you couldn't get Berzerk to work on the Frenzy board as well, there is another chip you have to swap, which is a little more tricky because it's soldered onto the Berzerk boards, then you can swap the two games, I haven't confirmed this, but I trust the person who told me this.

Do you have any parts left? Control panels, etc?
