Hey,

So I finally got around to putting my bat stick in my Berzerk cab, but for some reason it doesn't really look right... it looks like there's too much space at the top (stick is recessed about 1/2"), and the plastic of the joystick hits the lip of the control panel. Maybe my searching sucks (probably does), but are there any good pics of the bat installed, from the top and bottom?

Attached are pics of mine. Of course I have the metal cover/spring holder off, but that's unrelated.

Thanks,
DogP

Those extra screws are from the leaf switch joystick that was installed. I've left them in for now, since carriage bolt heads look better than holes... and the rest of the panel doesn't look that great anyway. I'm pretty sure Chris has been sold out of new panels for a while now.

The bat stick is through th original holes though... so that shouldn't be the cause.

Thanks,

This is just a shot in the dark since I have never seen one in person before, but does the joystick mount on the other side of the wood? In other words, between the metal CP and the wood.

I don't believe so... I saw an imprint of the original joystick where I reinstalled this one. And the wood is 3/4", but the gap is only ~ 1/2", so I don't think it could be installed like that.

Searched for pics, but found nothing that would help you right now. I do know that I re-assembled my bat-stick incorrectly one time causing the reflective disc to be too low to the PCB which made it completely not working. It's pretty easy to assemble it wrongly.

Did you check the manual, it has a good drawing of how it should be.

I'll see if I have time to make some pics tonight, I still have to correct one of the fire buttons anyway.

Thanks for looking... I did look at the manual and I think it is assembled correctly (and I never disassembled it, though maybe someone else did). I was hoping the manual had a full CP assembly to verify the wood was correct, but I'm pretty sure that's right.

One thing... is the CP supposed to be totally flat, or should it curve upward around the stick? This one has a slight curve around the entire stick, though it's not drastic, so I don't think that's the problem.

What I did notice was what looks like possible wear on the shaft... maybe that's why it's hitting rather than stopping on the restrictor plate. I assume the shaft shouldn't have those large flat sides?

I've attached pics of both things.

Thanks!

Anyone able to look at theirs and tell me about the possible shaft wear, and CP flatness?

Thanks,
DogP

Sorry man, I actually did remove the CP from my machine but havent make pics yet.
The panel should be flat though (apart from the joystick hole of course). the bump in yours shouldn't be there.
Looks like that may be the problem. I did check, when I move the stick all the way it won't hit the panel at all, it hits the restrictor. I'll make some pics when I get home....

Cool... I'll try to flatten out the panel... if you can get some pics, or let me know about the shaft and where it actually hits, that'd be awesome. I'm thinking maybe I can build up the shaft by welding it then grinding it flush, if it's necessary.

FINALLY !!!

NOTE: I have adjusted the position of the opto PCB to get it working best with the diagonals, so this set-up is NOT factory default.

Hope they are of any help at all.

I do still have my old panel which I have no use for. It is of course damaged from use, but it's still flat.

Here's a pic from when it was still on my cab:

Looks like the original "block" is missing on yours and they tried to fix it....and that may have caused the wear on the shaft. The shaft on my Berzerk stick is still completely round and shows no wear.

Thanks a ton for those pics. That's really strange though... I wonder if there were multiple revisions of the stick. If mine is hacked, someone went through a LOT of work to do it, and they did a really good job making it look original (same materials, and it definitely was done BITD). Also, mine has a different metal cover than yours (mine looks like: http://www.quarterarcade.com/Game.aspx/9951?m=3 , though the cover prevents me from seeing anything else).

I would have actually guessed that "block" was a repair, but it makes sense that they may have updated the design if wear was a problem (though I was under the impression that the original bat stick was a pretty limited design and was discontinued for regular leaf switches).

Anyway, I'm gonna try flattening my panel and repairing the wear on the shaft... hopefully it turns out. I still have no idea whether the stick works, but I figure that can be repaired (I bought the stick for $5, so I guess I can't really expect much ;) ).

Thanks!

Maybe there were different versions indeed. Since you bought it loosse no way of knowing (else the serial nr. of the cab might provide some info).

I think the cover (and spring "bridge") are simply painted black at one point in time by a previous owner. The reason for that is easy to see on the pics of my joystick: rust....I removed it but it's back so I'll paint them black too.

Some tips to get the stick running:
-clean the disc very well, the shinier the better
-if hitting the diagonals is hard, try to move the PCB a little closer to the disc by using some extra rings (like I did). -Don't overdo it though, if you get TOO close to the disc the opto's won't work anymore.
-Check the cap on the PCB. Mine was very bad and I replaced it.
- when trying the stick, be sure to use the cover. This blocks out light from the environment that can influence the working of the opto's.

Thanks for the tips... that's really helpful. I'm gonna try wiring it up this afternoon, so I'll post how it goes. I'll definitely shine up that disc and clean the optos before hooking it up.

Looking at those links you posted, the construction of mine looks like the diagram from your second link... so I don't think it's a hack. Also, I don't think the diagonals should be a problem, because the restrictor plate has a square-ish cutout, but I'll keep those tricks in mind when testing.

Thanks,
DogP

Woohoo! I cleaned the optos, polished the disc, crimped the connector pins on and hooked it up... it just works! Thanks a ton for the help... my Berzerk is no masterpiece, but at least it plays with the right stick now.

DogP

You're wrong. EVERY Berzerk is a masterpiece. ;)

yeah I noticed that yours looked more like the drawing than mine too :)

Anyway, sorry for the delays but glad it helped a bit :)
