I see many restored or repaired Berzerks with newer joysticks. Because of the flaws of the originial bat stick, it seems to be accepted as a good upgrade to do - which doesn't detract from the overall value of the machine. It might actually add value.

And yet I see a lot of demand for the bat stick when it comes to people looking for parts.

It's an interesting little incongruity. Thoughts?

I'd like to know why they decided to use the optical stick in the first place. Was there something wrong with the mechanical 8 way joysticks in use at the time? Was there something better about their optical solution?

In hindsight it seems a poor choice but I'm wondering why they went that direction in the first place?

I going to guess they thought it would minimize service to the machines and
be more attractive to opertators. In the end they crapped out left and right.

I have a modern perfect 360 in mine. Not a 100% happy with it. It has a
return to center issue I have yet to figure out.

mine has a bat stick and it works flawlessly, when I see one with a red ball top I think it looks stupid

No Bat, No Dice...

It's just not a real Berzerk without the bat stick...

I have the perfect 360 with the repro bat and I love it.

I think the main reason it failed and got replaced was all the morons you would see in an arcade and little kids. They would hang off of the things and just slam them as hard as possible. Most of us are different around here but in general people don't give a damn about something that belongs to a business and will beat the hell out of it.

That's what I bought for mine, although I still haven't gotten around to starting the restoration/repair.

From what I've seen, and I'm no expert, the original optical stick seems like a clunky design. It's aesthetically pleasing, but not robust like a Wico stick with leaf switches.

i heard a rumor that Berzerk almost failed originally because they were using a faulty analog stick but got it swapped out in time. haven't looked for the story on google, yet.

is that true.

i have wico 360s with the spring which is rather stiff so they just sit unused. but the optical option is cool.
