So what is the best method to repair these? I could just try to use pliers and rebend them, but it seems like it would be better to replace them. Has anyone gone through this before? I have about 6 spots on the board that have the pins bent to almost 90 degrees each.

I usually replace the header pins as a part of reworking any board. In fact, I have replaced a few hundred pins over the course of the last few days. The only time it is ever a problem is when there is an odd header in use.

Replacement headers can be bought at any of the common sources including Bob Roberts, Mouser, and Digikey.

If you do decide to rebend them take the time to resolder them after you bend them back into place. Solder can crack under the pressure caused by bending...

Depends on the pins.

I've used slender duckbilled pliers to straighten header pins before.

If they are bent too far then desolder and replace the individual pins

Anyway, I typically pull the pin, and replace, if im going to bend it back, i heat it up so it bends easier and less stress on w/e else around it as well as reflowing the solder. If youve never worked with soldering that stuff before, remember that a ew seconds of heat goes a long way. To much and youll burn out other components. Use a low wattage soldering iron (I use a 15w, some use up to 25w) and not one of those 250w guns. To pull the pin, jst grab it w/ needle nose pliers, then heat up the solder on the back of the board under it, itll slide right out.

Good luck!
