bench power supplies

3 Amps is very wimpy. Might be okay for 60 in 1s and such, but not for normal boards.
Find one with at least 15 Amps minimum.

It should work just fine for some things, but you will only get one voltage. Many boards and other devices require multiple.

Why not use a normal arcade power supply? Or, use a PC power supply. For my JAMMA rig I just used an old AT type power supply - the wires are so short that I don't need to adjust the 5v to compensate for them.

Are these any good for providing variable voltages on the bench or is there something else better?

They are good but will only provide a single output voltage. You probably want something that will provide more than one output voltage, something like +5vdc -5vdc +12vdc.

This is what I use to test the boards on a bench and I also use a transformer with a select few regulators for various voltages; like -22 volts dc -30 volts dc etc.

Ok, well raats. Yea I'm currently using a PC PS but I was hoping there was something a little more professional available for multiple voltages. Your right it only gives a single voltage whereas most boards need +5 -5 +12 -12 and then some oddball voltage. It'd be nice to find something for that oddball voltage you always find.

Well, I mean, you could use this for just that oddball voltage, and use the PC supply for everything else. Any unusual voltage is almost always real low current draw. But, it's kinda expensive and overkill for that though. Lots of simpler/cheaper power supplies out there you could use for that "extra voltage" when you need it.

I don't know, I've seen some that are like 22.5v or some such. but that's voltage not amperage current. If anyone's using something successfully for this purpose please share.

I have one like that; I can't remember what board it is but I remember it was only for programming the rom for high score. I think it is a -22.5 or -21. volts dc.

You don't really need much to produce that voltage at an amp or less. Many printers that have the power cord going to a box with a wire coming off of it can and usually produce abut 30volts at an 1.5A. Many laptops now want 17-25 volts dc at an amp or more. You can find these at many 2nd hand stores for little $.

The problem is when you need a -21 or -22.5 volts.

I think that is for my dig dug but not sure.
