Behold: Exidy Max-A-Flex Video

...

nice.. especially because you have all the carts!

Bristles & Boulder Dash are awesome.

I know that these were recently ported for the 5200.

I unfortunately sold mine to that TX museum that bombed.

jon

ps. the Boulder Dash intro music brought a tear to my eye.

In the vid, the black things on the left under the CP look like joystick ports sort of... are they?

That's a pretty awesome looking system and a fantastic looking machine, even if we couldn't see the side art :(

Would it be possible to mod a normal Atari 600XL for this purpose?

thanks for the video, I've never seen this game before, that would be cool if you could play 2600 games on it

This is so cool, thanks for posting it. I can see on the right side of the computer where the joystick ports would be, they have them punched out and heavier cables run. Did they just wire both joystick ports to the panel?

That is awesome! Never heard of the Max-a-Flex system before.

Here is a little suggestion, though. Get a magic eraser and clean up that control panel overlay, it looked pretty dirty in your video. I guarantee it will turn out looking brand new.

Nice score, Mike!

I grew up playing games on my Atari 800. I spent sooo many hours with Astro Chase, Boulder Dash, & Bristles (and Flip & Flop to a lesser extent). Fernando Herrera was a genius!

Being intimate w/ the Atari 8-bit computers, I have deduced that, when you put a credit in your Max-a-Flex, it resets the Atari computer & enables the control panel input & starts the timer. At the end of the timer, I imagine that it will reset the Atari again & disable control panel input at the same time.

The Option, Select, & Start buttons mimic those on the computer. They're for selecting # of players, difficulty, starting level, etc. Those always differed from game to game, depending on what the programmer wanted.

Enjoy!

They work perfectly! I wonder if operators BIID also knew that the 8-bit carts would work...

(And I've never seen those games before. They seem to be excellent ports.)

Note to self... buy the next Max-A-Flex system for sale and have it shipped if need be ;) :D.

Thanks for taking to the time to film and share the videos Mike!

very cool. Now I want to get mine fixed..

Its been many years since I messed with my 8bit system. But there are a few possible issues as to why protector 2 did not work:

1: dirty cart. Clean the cart
2: memory 600xl has 16k. They sold an expansion module to kick it up to 64k. I think some games need more the 16k to work properly.
3: some games you had to hold down the select or option key to bypass the built in basic (don't know if the 600xl had built in basic), If you pull the cart out and turn it on and if you get the ready prompt it has built in basic.
4: some games did not like working on the xl systems.
5: if the game used the keyboard or specail controllers, you probably are SOL. It would be cool if you could plug in the light gun and play bug hunt..

If I can get my maxflex working, I have way more than 100 carts I could try out. I probably have like 30 or 40 duplicates.

The 1200xl was the best computer they made as it did not have built in basic so it had few compatabily problems.. Once I see how they modifed the 600xl, I can probably hack an 800xl or the 1200xl the same way.
