Pinball machines as a whole are designed to attract. To get your coin.

No doubt like all things, some pins are built more equal than others and a recent night at a local pinball meet found me playing Bally's Fathom.

The first thing that struck me about this pin having never seen a Fathom before, was how beautiful it is just to look at. Standing back a ways and looking at the cab you have the green/blue of the cabinet but what really hits you is the vivid blues of the backglass. Starting grey at the top for the sky the blue deepens as you sink further in to the depths. A very striking backglass.

Looking next at the playfield and you find a similar color blend with grey tones at the top with deepening blue tones as you move towards the flippers. But all around the playfield is a mix of blues and greens that really suit the theme and give an overall stunning appearance. None other the colors are glaring or badly placed, they all seem to flow so smoothly with each-other.

I really did walk away thinking that Fathom was the most beautiful pin I had seen.

Whats some other pins you were struck with how beautiful a pin can be!

I think most of the late 70s to early 80s had some of the best looking artwork on pins. In my older collection, haunted house has the best looking artwork by far.

i feel that is the one missing ingredient of pinball today. even with licensed titles you can still have great art. that is something im hoping jersey jack brings back with his pins.

i like the great artwork on gottliebs 1953 grand slam woodrail backglass. the cabinet on united's hawaii is neat with surfer on it, sing along has a nice backglass.
creature from black lagoon has a eerie cabinet.

i used to like pinball machines for being fun to play....but as i see more and more games.....(lots i never heard of), junk titles, rare titles, low productions, popular ones.......i am beginning to more and more appreciate the artwork....especially ones with nice cabinet art

Thought I was getting in on this one early and someone already stole my pick! I love Haunted House. My favorite art ever. With the green displays and metal ramps/hardware, its like the bridge between the old and modern era.

I hear they are quite a nightmare (lol) to keep running, but I want one someday!

I'm running mostly new boards with the ground mods and it works everytime. The big issue is the lower playfield upkicker.
