So, I have an inconsistent problem with Battlezone. Sometimes the sound works perfectly; other times, either the left speaker doesn't work, or the sound of the firing tanks and explosions doesn't work, while the other sounds do. Anyone know why this might be happening?

All the sounds are generated by the AUX board. Look for broken off caps and check the edge connector / harness to that board. Some sounds are generated by the POKEY, but the sounds you mentioned are generated by discrete circuits starting at M2 and using the chips in the 'Audio Output' section of sheet 3B of the schematics.

The sound is amplified by the ARII board. Check the four pin connector and maybe reflow its pins.

The sound goes through the volume control. Maybe put a drop of deoxit and turn it up and down a few times to clean it. Also check for loose solder joints.

The sound comes out of the speakers, each of which has its own terminals and the pair of which has its own connector into the harness. Make sure they're all tight.

The sound is heard by your ears, but I can't troubleshoot those.
