I just finished modding my Battlezone PCB set with a set of X and Y centering pots and I wanted to write up a quick how-to and let people know just how freakin' AWESOME it is to FINALLY be able to dial in my Battlezone just perfectly.
This really isn't a mod so much as it is finishing up what was intended to begin with. The X and Y centering circuit was built in to a Battlezone PCB, but for whatever reason (cost cutting?) they didn't add the 3 simple parts needed to actually USE the centering circuit. The "mod" is just to add the 3 parts they didn't... there are already holes for you (well, solder filled hoes). If you can cap a monitor you can do this mod.
All that is needed two of each of the following:
Radio Shack Part #272-1069 Capacitor, .1 uf @ 50 volts radial
Radio Shack Part #271-1132 Resistor, 220 k @ half watt
...and two 50K potentiometers...my local Radio Shack didn't have them so I don't have a part number for you... but you can use any 50K pot you want...as long as it will "fit".
Next... follow the very simple instructions on page 25 of this document:
http://www.crazykong.com/tech/bw_vector_monitor_faq.pdf
Basically you're just going to install 1 resistor, 1 capacitor and 1 potentiometer per circuit (X and Y)...
After you're done, fire up the game and adjust the screen left, right, up and down all you want making lining up the cardboard bezel a breeze...
WIN!
