I have a BZ Cabaret. It is stuck in spanish, it was suggested(coinopspace) that i replace 74LS244 @ N11. I did that along with re-capping the main pcb, and the aux board. Still stuck in spanish. It plays well just drives me nuts that it is stuck in spanish. If it helps. I flipped the dip switches to change from 2 to 5 tanks, it changed to 5 tanks but won't change back to 2. I couldn't find alot of BZ repair logs on the internet soooo any help would be appreciated.

You do know that has to be turned OFF be fore it takes????

Please don't take the following suggestion as condescending. It is meant to help the next guy who searches for this issue as much as you:

It is a little known fact that dip switch banks are sometimes installed upside down on boards. This does not change their function. As printed on the switch housing itself Off is still Off and On is still On as the switch simply opens or closes a circuit. Putting the housing on upside down does not affect weather the contacts are open or closed. What it DOES affect is that the position of switch "1" on the board will be marked as "8" on the switch housing if it is on upside down and vice versa. Make sure you are flipping the correct switches. Also, I would guess that you could leave the game in but switch the CURRENCY to Spanish and at the coin up screen, it may appear the game is in Spanish when it is not. See what the "High Score" screen says.

Just a thought as I always check the simple stuff before I start pulling chips. It is far easier and 90% effective in my opinion.

hey ringwar did you follow that you need to adjust the dip settings at the opposite end of the dip switch panel and you will adjust the language instead of the number of tanks?

go to www.crazykong.com if you don't have the manual

Yup, tried all this. Actually before i changed the IC. And i recapped it prior to changing the IC because some of the caps were leaking. Still in Spanish...........

Stuck on 5 Tanks, and Spanish... sounds like the thing is upside down.

I can't remember and my machine's monitor is down right now, but does it show DIPs in test mode? Quick way to test the see how it's reading them, whether it's upside down, or what.

Edit: Ahh... posted while I was typing. Any chance the DIP is somehow fully corroded and not reading contact? See if there's a trace broken or something on the way to that DIP? If there isn't a high for the switch to feed out, then it'll just stay low all the time. One of the sides of the switches should all be connected, see if that side is getting +5V.

well i used this :http://api.ning.com/files/W-LV4M*eb...bMtxrvzws8yPSRpBTeF2*S7JWLbySukWL5D3Uh/bz.png

and all the corresponding pins on the IC read High when the switches were off (meaning power going to ic) and Low when the switches were on (shunted to ground thru the dip switch).

SOOO under this logic it's not the switch (ohmed out) and it's not the IC i need to look to the next component........... right?

P11 goes to LMN3 (continuity between them good) a big SY6502A I had one on a centipede parts board. Made no difference. So i'll look at R9 and may end up ordering a replacment for P11 it's like $5 for 6 of them. And i already have sockets.

Even though R9 is on the schematic, it is not connected (you can tell by the jumper pads). I would look into the OPT0 signal. Without it, the 244 at N11 would not be active for the processor to read the data from the dipsw. I would suspect the 139 at K5 first. Does the dipsw at P10 work? They may not work as well if K5 is bad.

Yeah the other dip switches function properly.

I would still suspect K5. I would think that if P2 was bad, you would have other issues with the game. If it's only that dipsw bank, then it's either the 244 or K5. Do all the dips on M10 not work, or is it just a few? If it's a certain switch, check the pull-up resistors R59 through R66.

Well originally when i had this issue it was stuck in spanish (bought it like this) so switch 7&8 that control language wouldn't change anything.(i was able to change # of tanks to 5 with dip 1&2) or maybe it was already on 5 tanks and i didn't notice. Now none of the switches on that dip do anything. I installed a socket at N11 and a new 244, I also did continuity checks on my socket to make sure it has connection on all pins to the board. I also put the original 244 into my socket at N11 to see if it made a dif, and it didn't.

Well i'll update where i get once the IC's show up in the mail. I ordered replacements for P2 and K5. Thanks for all the help.

good luck I know you will figure this out.

I had a helluva time getting the dead battlezone cabaret I had 100% working, but I sure am glad I stuck with it. There is a thread somewhere in this forum about it, not the same issue you are having, but I had a lot of issues, lol.

I hope so, this machine is probably the cleanest machine i own, only has 9600 plays on the counter. And I bought it for the killer deal of $200, working aside from this damn Spanish issue!!
