Hi;
I have a Batttlezone PCB that has no Z channel output. I checked all the voltages on the PCB, and all are present and within specs.
The game plays and you can see this if I turn the brightness all the way up, (retrace lines everywhere). I scoped the Z output and verified that it is not putting anything out.
It appears that the previous owner tried to repair this issue as almost all of the components have been replaced on the Z channel output, starting at the end of the schems going backwards, with only a couple of exceptions.
I studied the schems and with my limited EE experience, I am needing a little guidance (lot) at this point.
Could the LF13201 at position D11 cause this problem?
Would I be able to prove / disprove this with the use of my logic probe?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks is advance
Jeff

Jeff;
Thank you for the link,I checked it out and the 399 was on my "order list", (don't have one in stock). As I said, the previous owner replaced most of the components with a few exceptions, he was a master at the "Shot Gun" process - well I guess not actually a master or it would have been fixed my now........
Anyway, I do not have a couple of the IC's that are "possibles" and will be placing the order hopefully tonight.
Now that you mentioned the 399 specifically, I'll probe and see what the results are.
I will post my results once I know for sure.
Thank you again.

Yeah, I remember when I was taking a look at the inputs and outputs of F8 (74LS175) the inputs would always act the same way but the outputs were getting stuck around either 0.5v or 1.5v. Even after I put in a new 74LS175 it was doing this so I was pretty sure I had it with the 74LS399.

It's worth a shot...

Good luck. :beerchug:

The last one I had with a Z problem it was a bad LS11 @j9

You should be able to check most of that circuit with a logic probe, but I really like to look at the lines with a scope that way you can see a bad signal.

Also it would be a good idea to ohm out the previously replaced chips traces, jic that was the bad chip, and a trace got mangled in the repair process previously.

The LF13201 could be a problem, but I think typically if it's bad you would also have issues with the X and Y out.

Could be the TL084 or the LM319. You'd need a scope on those sections to be sure.

LS11 - Don't have that one either, I will put it on tonight's order, just in case......
Thanks
Jeff

OK, I finally got back to my BZ PCB and all of the IC's mentioned had already been replaced (about 12 of them) with the exception of the 174, which I had already socketed so I went ahead and replaced that and still NG.....
I am going to bench the PCB - AGAIN - and check all the previous replacements and all the traces associated with the replacements and see if something was damaged during the "shotgunning" OyVey!
It looks like EVERYTHING was replaced in the "Z" channel but I will compare the schems and see what the heck is going on.
Thanks again for everyone's help.
