How does Battletoads (Arcade) hold up to Battletoads (NES)?

When I was little, I loved me some Battletoads on my NES, but of course, it was insanely hard.

Is Battletoads (Arcade) a different boat, or more of the same (with an added third person). I'd love to hear some opinions from those who have played both.

The NES (and Megadrive) versions of Battletoads are terrible compared to the arcade version in my opinion. It's been so long since I've played either that I can't really comment on the difficulty, but I can offer this video of the game being played on MAME:

I like the arcade game more, but did play the NES version a bit as a kid. I remember how hard it was and I could never get past that damn stage with those bikes. The arcade version was quiet a shock when I discovered it on MAME and it's a much more violent game. It's definitely not as hard when you don't have to deal with that bike stage. I'm not sure what a Battletoads board goes for, but I got mine for just $20 off ebay and even then I knew what a lucky break I got.

Battletoads on the NES was my favorite video game growing up. All of my other games were too easy.

Recently I streamed a live play on twitch.tv, http://www.twitch.tv/lifereboot

I only played the arcade version once. I remember thinking that it was similar to the NES version, but clearly not the same. I think it's just a matter of what you're used to playing.

I've wondered this myself. Battletoads NES is legendarily difficult (usually in the top 3-5 of "hardest games ever" lists). If you think the bike stage is hard in single player, try doing it with another human being in co-op. You should probably make sure you don't give a shit about your friendship before trying that btw.

If the arcade version is as hard, omfg...it would be the worst quarter sucking design ever.

Arcade wasn't as bad as NES version.

The bike stage was just a matter of memorization. Having said that, I still never beat either one.

The bike stage was just a matter of memorization.

true. In fact the whole game was memorization. Personally, I think the fire level with the jets is the hardest part of the game. Others insist it's the clinger winger stage that's toughest. The secret to the clinger winger is that you are faster than the orb on the corners.

I memorized all of the stages at a young age and I've never forgotten them...

The arcade game is definitely a lot easier than the NES game. It's a pretty cool beat-em-up, better than the Konami ones like Simpsons, X-Men, etc. These types of games don't have much replayability for owning, though. Seems they're designed for kids to spend a ton of money to play through, then never touch again. Try the game on MAME first and see if you think it's worth owning.

Battletoads on the NES is one of the best games ever, especially the 2nd stage, trying to volley the birds for 1UPs while also trying not to die. I wasn't able to beat the game until a few years ago, and mastering the second level is a big part of why.

As for hardest levels, the sewers can always screw with me, as can the fire level with the crazy jets at the end. I used to always take the warp at the Snakes level to skip the fire level, but not anymore.
