I'm thinking vector RAM issue... but agree with the recommendation of test mode.

Do you get any tones from the memory test when switching to test mode ? One beep means the RAM is good......more than one = see the manual

when i self test all i get it a black screen.nothing ever comes up

If nothing appears on the video, I'm pretty sure it's beeping out the RAM error code. Does your audio work? It should beep one or more short tone, followed by a long high tone (or perhaps just one long high tone). From those beeps, the manual will list which RAM is bad.

If yours looks OK at first, but displays junk only when there is "a lot" on the screen, I'm thinking it is likely one of the higher vector RAMs, such as D2, D1, C2 or C1.

Was putting my money on a flakey vector ROM or socket, but vector RAM is a good bet as well.

ok i got 5 mild beeps then a real loud one .the manual says its a bad ram b1 .would this chip be on the auxiliary pcb board.and one more question who would sell this thanks again

All RAM is on the main (big) board

2114 static RAM is not hard to find from any of our chip friends (Riptor, Channelmanic, etc)

Yup. Get several 2114s when you order. The self-test only reports the first bad one it finds. There may be more bad RAMs (there are 8 total IIRC). 2114s are common in that era, as well, and are good things to have on-hand.

I have had this same thing once, random lightning, and it ended up being the deflection yoke

Unbelievable but true

Sounds like ram to me though in your case :)

While it sounds like the RAM, I have found that if a BZ has been sitting for a while normal maintenance is to:
- Unplug and reseat all cables
- Press down all socketed chips.
- Unplug and reseat all power supply cables.

These beasties are really sensitive to any corrosion or oxidation on the chips and cables. Periodically reseating them will reduce about 90% of the percieved "fragility" issues people have attributed to Battlezones over the years. Until I sold it last year, I had my Battlezone since 1983 and that was about all the maintenance (along with cleaning the mirror and the top of the monitor to get the dust off) that it ever needed.
