I know that many KLOVers like to replace the 'AA' battery board (like on Williams games) and do the conversion to the button batteries.

If the current battery board shows no corrosion, would it be fine to just replace the 'AA' Alkaline batteries with 'AA' Lithium batteries instead - saving the conversion work. I understand that the Alkaline will leak over time after they are long dead and go unchanged ruining the battery holder. Am I correct in assuming that this shouldn't happen if I replace the Alkalines with Lithiums?

Personally I'd convert anyway. I also don't like the button conversion. The button batteries will eventually leak too (though, after a long time). I prefer to get a 3-AAA holder and mount it to the bottom of the cab and run wires up to CPU board.

I would replace the original battery holder at a minimum. The originals have issues after 30+ years. I guess you could check the original for continuity to ensure they are good, but a quick replacement will ensure the battery is not a problem.
