So, I volunteered to take a look at a fellow KLOVers Nintendo Vs. PCB. Don't really have the time, but wanted to help out. I was informed that it was tested and working, but one particular game wouldn't work.

So before doing anything, I tested for shorts between +5 and GND. Beep. There was a short. I did a visual and noticed the following near the battery holder. Looks like Acid damage to me and likely the reason the board isn't working. It has always seemed like a common issue in the Pin world, but not discussed as much in the Vid world (except for a few special games) which seemed a little odd to me.

What do you all think? Seems salvageable to me.

No thoughts from anyone?

I at least need confirmation from someone that the board has some battery acid damage.

That's definitely battery acid damage...

For future reference, with VS games, remove the batteries and throw them away. Those batteries don't save high scores - only bookkeeping information.

That doesn't look too bad to me, but it's kinda hard to tell the extent of the damage from those zummed pictures.

Repair....

For sure it is acid (alkaline) damage. And from the pictures you have posted it can be saved. I just went through an extensive Berzerk ZPU repair with similar damage....now the board is working just fine. You just need to take your time and be meticulous with scrapping the traces down to copper and neutralizing everything. A black trace means there is corrosion. Add jumpers when traces are obliterated....and just roll through it. Obviously those chips need to be replaced.

If you are in the 'restore' and not replace mode like me...you can save it. Here is a link to my acid damage repair on my Berzerk ZPU. Shows a before and after picture.

Good luck....
