I was able to go to NYC for a business trip at the end of April. Knowing this was a big city, I knew I HAD to scope out possible arcades. Chinatown Fair had already closed by this point, and aside from a Dave and Buster's in Times Square, there really wasn't much of anything happening in Manhattan. What I was able to find was in Brooklyn. That night I was able to go to three awesome places. 2 for pinball (Fratelli's and Satellite Lounge), and 1 awesome place for arcades.

BARCADE Brooklyn has a great selection of classic arcade games and great beer. The idea is so simple, I don't know why there aren't more of these type establishments around the US. Ground Kontrol and Barcade are perfect examples of bars/arcades that are sucessful and fun.

check out the article I wrote on gameroom junkies about it: http://bit.ly/l04Pg4

Also, if you're interested in a great place for pinball (also in Brooklyn), check out the post I did on Fratelli's Brick Pizza Joint - http://bit.ly/jUgweD

barcade is great. Some of the games need some TLC. I'll go back one day and try to put a high score on their board.

Re: Barcade. It's cool, but go during the week if you can. Maybe it's just bad luck but when I've been there during the weekend it was so packed I couldn't really enjoy it .

I was at Barcade in Brooklyn about 4 or 5 years ago. It was really cool! Lots of great games and the high score wall was pretty damn impressive. I figured the scores on the classics wouldnt been that high, but definitely some hard core classic gamers go there! Now I heard there is another in Jersey City, so I need to check that one out too.

Barcade can get crowded. In fact, the photo you see at the top was on a monday night at like 8PM. If they can draw that crowd on a MONDAY, I'm scared what the place looks like on a friday or saturday.

If anyone ever goes to Brooklyn, I suggest doing what we did. Start at like 6 with Pizza and pins at Fratellis, head to barcade for some beers and arcades, grab some beef jerky before you leave barcade at 11, then head over to satellite for some more beers and pinball until the wee hours (they don't close 'til 4) if you're a young'un. :)

Is that the bar that Robert Mruczek is in from the film Chasing Ghosts when he says that he would like to play from open to close and try to "put up a score" on Star Wars?

Looks like it ...

It's been a long time since I saw Chasing Ghosts, but Robert definitely did play a long game at Barcade. He started in the morning and stopped the game late at night. I don;t remember how long he played for but it was definitely stopped before closing time and I think he put up somewhere between 60 and 70 million.

Sounds like a plan. Headed up there sometime soon to take these in as well as some beer gardens.

i ran out of time and didn't make it to Satellite Lounge, but Barcade and Fratelli's were both great. What a rare treat to see so many machines in the wild.

Fratelli's guy (Vito) said they're getting rid of LOTR because it's always broken, and replacing it with Iron Man. I haven't played Scared Stiff in a long time, and it's a great pin. It was also the first time i had played Family guy and Big Buck Hunter and I couldn't have been more bored. Stern's direction towards wide open playfields with no toys and nothing to do, is so boring. That said, the Sopranos was surprisingly fun for a Stern.

Also, the pizza was good and the staff at Fratelli's kept spouting sound bytes from the game and cheering for me when i got a free game.

The bartender at Barcade was also really great and she and her fiancee had just bought The Getaway. The vids that were on (which was all but 3) all worked well, except for some sound issues on Q*bert and some monitors in need of rejuving.

Overall, both places are great and I wish more of these existed. i can't believe that bar owners can't figure out how to make some $200 arcade games pay for themselves...
