I'm trying to figure out where the wire from the knocker goes to J2 on the solenoid board. I can't figure out from the schematic which pin it is supposed to go to. This is for 78 Playboy.
Thanks for any help.

Thanks. That is the one I tried and I got a huge spark somewhere on the solenoid board when I plug that pin in. I quickly turned it off and the thankfully, the game still runs fine. I checked and replaced Q3 (which was dead) and also replaced the diode. I also checked the knocker coil and it tests bad. I've ordered a replacement. Would a bad coil cause that spark or would I be looking at a different problem? I've never worked with coils before.

Assuming you have the coil disconnected ( ohm it out and see if it is bad ) your game can tell you about the coil.

Go into coil test, stop on that coil, hit the start button, and then start hitting the + diagnostic button to step you through coil, fuse, wire colors, and connector info on what connector and which pin.

Manuals can have mistakes, I have yet to see a mistake in diagnostics.

If wired right, I'd suspect coil next.

Thanks for the tips. The coil is disconnected and it is testing bad compared to the other good coils and it looks to be pretty crispy.

When running through the test, I haven't found a way to stop it on a specific coil. It just runs through the coil cycle and the start button doesn't do anything. I'm also not sure where a + button is other than the test switch but that just goes on to the next test (sound, I believe).

I've got a new coil on the way and I guess I'll just replace it and put the wire back into J2 pin 5 and see what happens. Not sure what else I can do. Any advice is much appreciated.

I'm sorry, forget my post. I was thinking you were working on a newer Williams game, I saw AFM on your line up and ran with that.

Just ohm out the wire from the SDB connector to where the coil sits. This will tell you if there is a short in the line. Be sure to install the diode on the new coil correctly to avoid future problems. Lastly, replace the resistor for Q3 as well. --Rich

Got the new coil, installed it and blew the Q3 transistor again. I looked at the newly installed coil, did some reading up here on KLOV and found out someone had wired the coil in backwards. Replaced the transistor, switched the wiring and it works great now. No wonder the coil and solenoid board were so toast, the damn thing has been wired up backwards for who knows how long. Thanks for everyone's help on this.

Glad you got it working. Wanna come finish off my KISS pin now?

Haha, I've been following your progress closely. You've made it that far, you definitely don't need me! Nice work bringing it back to life. I loved the old Kiss pinball when I was a kid! I've learned a ton on the old Bally and there is great documentation out there for noobs to pinball like me.

Looking forward to seeing your progress.
