I have had this for a couple of months and I am getting back to working on it. The playfield was totally shot, so I am trying my luck at an overlay.

The cutouts the overlay had were black, rather than the surrounding color. I spray painted around those to try and match the overlay.
I applied my overlay and had a fair amount of trouble trying to get it to fit. It had some quality issues that I could overlook, but the I do not believe that the overlay matches my playfield. I am just going to do the best I can and get this mess finished.

to help with alignment put a florescent light under the playfield while your lining it up. will help with lining up the inserts.

who made that overlay? classic arcades?
i have a supersonic with a trashed playfield too, looks like some one touched it up with a box of crayons and then sprayed some clear on top of it locking in the dirt & the mylar
craptastic

I got it off of E-bay. In general the line-up was OK. The two special "cutout's" at the bottom do not line up if you get the others in line. The rollover's have a black disk that is way to large. I am going to use a hole cutter on some mylar to cover the cutout because I can not cut that circle freehand.

It takes a huge commitment to remove all of the hardware and then put this thing down.

i have never seen one of these playfield overlays in person but read that many peeps choose to shoot clear coat on top of these - is this needed / true ?

is it like a big old decal / sticker?

You'll never get everyone to agree on either way. People clearcoat it for protection, others expect it will peel off eventually or the overlay will not adhere to the wood forever, causing the clearcoat to come up.

I have my Supersonic finally assembled. It looks adequate. The overlay must have to be perfectly aligned, but even then, I do not think it fits. If I did not like working on these things, this was a epic failure. I bought two overlays for this. It needed a rubber kit, new drop targets, 4 new displays, a new MPU, a new power supply, a chip for the sound board and I had to repair the display/driver board. Once I bought the overlay, I just had to keep going to get the project finished.
I was able to offset some of the cost. I would not have found my stash of SC-01's if I was not looking for a used MPU. I may be able to sell some displays also.

glad to see you got it all back together & it does look really good but also sounds like a recommendation not to do the playfield overlay
