I am helping a friend who just bought a bally radical machine. The issue is, when the game is powered on, the displays will read factory settings and stops there. If you open the backbox up and push the reset button the game will come on and play fine. This has to be done everytime the game is powered on. Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this?

I would start by replacing the batteries. Take a look for corrosion around the battery holder area while you're at it.

I was at his house for just a few minutes, but don't remember seeing any corrosion. Are the batteries just standard AA, or something different? If the batteries don't fix it, what else might cause this issue?

On System 11 games, which that Radical is, batteries, or the battery holder are almost always the problem. Yes, they are "AA" batteries, 3 of 'em.

Pull the batteries out and inspect the contacts on the battery holder. They should be clean and shiny. Even a little corrosion can be a problem. Often one of more of the contact pads on the holder are corroded and even missing a chunk.

If there is any corrosion replace the holder. All of the pinball parts vendors stock the newer style plastic holder which I prefer over the original style. If you have any concerns about future battery leakage, best to install an off-board type of battery holder. Most of the parts vendors stock these as well.
