i have a 76 freedom and on the top of the playfield above the bumpers there are two rubbers with switches behind them. they score 10 points every time you hit them but somtimes they do not ring the chime. they work most of the time on the second hit. why is this

after playing it more it is all of the 10 pointers and it seems that if you hit one, the chime is real weak, but if you hit a couple in a row quickly it takes off and chimes loudly. its only on the 10 point chime though

Sounds to me that your 10 point relay needs to be cleaned and adjusted. Those relays are pretty sensitive to how they are adjusted. I had one burn up a coil like that before due to that relay and if its not adjusted correctly or dirty it can cause the symtoms you describe.

do you have any advice of how to clean and adjust that. i have a four player game so theoretically i should be able to switch it to the second player and it shouldnt act that way , uless that one is messed up too, correct

is the plunger for the 10 point chime solenoid supposed to have a rubber or nylon tip on it. mine has a metal plunger that contacts the chime plates.

No, second player uses the 10 point relay the same as any other player. Once you locate the 10 point relay, engage and disengage it manually to verify that all the contacts are indeed contacting. I generally watch the tab to be contacted for movement as it is being engaged. If it doesnt move, adjust the tabs accordingly. I just simply use a points file to clean them. Be carefull! they are sensitive and bend easily!

Generally they do have nylon inserts in the end of the plunger and a rubber bumper on the bracket for them to come to rest against.

I had a similar problem with my em machine and it turned out to be a dirty plunger and insert. It had just gotten gunky over the years. That would cause it to stick soemtimes. I pulled out the coil and replaced the insert and cleaned up the plunger and that solved it.

the coil and sleeve are new and i cleaned the plunger. last night i found the switch on the 10 point relay for the chime and it seemed to be a little bigger gap than usual. i closed the gap slightly but i havent been able to test it out yet .
