Trying to understand the part numbers on the MPU - is the 2962 like a replacement for the 2518's? Seem to be simliar if not identical layout.

Also - the number after the dash denotes the game for the 2962, are the boards the same otherwise, just with different roms? My Silverball Mania has a 2962-8 board in it, which was supposed to be another game. I'm sure they just swapped the roms over though.

Silverball mania uses what's typically called a -35 (dash 35) MPU. That board can be used in all of the Bally and Stern MPU100 games.

The ROM on the MPU could be any number of different ROMs. The board could have been strapped for EPROM (2716, 2732, 2532), PROM (9316), or who knows what.

If it's working I wouldn't worry about it. If not start here:

I'm trying to figure out where this 2962 part # comes from - is it a newer version of the -35 MPU?

Like I said with the book it mentions the dash number (as it pertains to the 2962) denotes the game, unlike the 2518-35 which denoted a particular MPU. I think they do that just to know what rom *software* to install on the 2962 board. (What game its for).

Clear as mud?

AS-2962-8 = Paragon

It's a -35.

EDIT: An easy way to tell: -17 and MPU100 will have a 32 pin connector at connector J5. -35 will be 33 pins and MPU200 will be 34.
