This guy RokCoder has some good YouTube tutorials about coding in Scratch.
Here's his playable (and very authentic) Galaga clone, and his also playable "Badly Drawn Galaga" clone!
Badly Drawn Galaga is really funny...he used his own hand-drawn graphics and sound effects.

start them off using PICO-8, highly recommended!

Scratch is just a ton of fun. It's perfect for me, since it's very visual and easy to just get started—plenty of shared code that you can "remix," edit, and see the changes.

It's really pretty incredible what you can achieve with it! It has a rep of being just for little kids, but there's some high-level coding going on, too, with guys like RokCoder and griffpatch.

There's this other coder named Jialan Wang, and she has these vids about how she made Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Arkanoid on Scratch! Really somethin.
