So, how many people have been bitten by the bad flybacks? I have been rebuilding chassis this past week and found three bad flybacks in my spares. Like Mod I burned through quite a few HOTs and once those go the fuse pops too.

This is really pissing me off...

I think we should start posting the date codes on these, and see if there's a specific range that they're failing within.

I just had a bad new 20ez flyback (luckily it was open instead of shorted so it just didn't work)

You have to remember that all these flys are pretty cheap and most likely are being made substandard in china (to keep costs down).

This is another reason that when I fix stuff, I usually just fix whats wrong instead of replacing other working components. But to each their own.

Agreed - but there are a couple exceptions to this rule. The most notable being

G07 ORIGINAL flybacks and
K7000 white knob flybacks.

Even if they're working before, I'll replace them regardless.

+100000 id rather take my chsances on a new fly vs hoping the old cracked and falling apart one " will hang in there"

i had a headscratcher k7000 chassis i could have sworn the fly was bad, however it worked fine in another chassis so i have not personally experienced this phenomenon yet.

A better question would be - where did you buy the bad flybacks? Certain parts suppliers may use different manufacturers (if there are different manufacturers).

I have bought about 10 of the K7000 flybacks from Chad at ArcadeCup, and found one to cause problems...

The ones I used came from a couple of purchases from Bob. The newest shipment was ordered within the last month, the previous one was some time last year.

Is there a way to test one of these new K7000 flybacks to see if it is bad? I know there are flyback testers out there, but I don't have one.

I can tell you that the one I have that blows HOTs tests as good with my ring tester. It may work just fine, but at the wrong benchmarks for the chassis it was intended for...

i had always thought about a small pcb with swappable sockets that the fly could lock into, so you could fire the fly and make sure it arcs, check its secondary windings, too

its one of those ideas that i will probhably never get to, but if these new bad flys become more and more of a problem, then something like that might end up bieng necessary someday.

I had some time today and I revisited the chassis' that I installed these flybacks on. By dumb luck I stumbled upon a break in the focus wire going to the neckboard. I cut the wire back past the break, soldered it into place, and now I have a fully working chassis.

I have a tool that I used back in my automotive days that would send a signal down a line and a second tool would be used to detect the signal. You would attach the signal generator to the exposed end of the wire and trace the wire with the detector until the signal went away, signifying a break in the wire. Something like this tool could be used to test for breaks in these wires the same way, since the other end of the focus wire is hidden inside the flyback. I did a couple of quick searches but I didn't find anything like it online.
