Point pressing allowed, how much can you score on level 1? That is the first barrel stage and first girder stage. So far I have gotten 15,700 I skipped the first hammer on the barrels. I think I can do more.

Around 20 K depending on the points for blue barrels and how the foot jump goes on the rivet board.

The guys who are really good at point pressing can get nearly 13K just on the first barrel board. I think the record in MAME is 13,400 (again, barrel board only)

Do they run the clock down, or somewhere in between?

They group barrels in 2 or 3, then jump the group, run down the ladder, jump them again, etc. They get the bottom hammer and get lots of smashes, and yeah, they run the clock out to 0 (when Kong runs out of barrels, the stack actually disappears one by one)

I never noticed the barrels disappearing!

It is AMAZING to me that I keep learning NEW things about Donkey Kong like this! I know that I am off to a good start when I can score around 16,000 points on the first two screens. It surprises me when you look at all of the different strategies that people use.

I have thought about hooking up a camera and recording the "best" I can do on the first two levels so that I could share and let others see what little things that I do differently -like the first 100 point barrel jump in the game. I am PRETTY SURE that people don't start their game off the same way that I do...

I never knew the barrels run down. Does it take all the way to 0 for the barrels to run out or does it happen sooner?

Kong rolls/throws the number of barrels equal to the timer/100 (so if it starts at 5000, then he has 50 barrels. They start to run out when he has less than 4)

Nice score! Does the first hammer make that much difference?

I just use one hammer per stage.

Yes, the bottom hammer makes a huge difference, and so does jumping and re-jumping multiple barrels. For instance, if you get a group of two or three barrels come at you while you're up on the 4th girder, you can jump them there, climb down the ladder to the 3rd girder, jump them there, climb down again to the 2nd girder, and jump those same barrels on the 2nd girder. If you've got 3 barrels grouped that's 1500 points (500 x 3) for jumping the same barrels.

When you grab the first hammer, if you face right and time your jump right you can jump over a barrel, get the 100 points, grab the hammer, and then smash that same barrel with the hammer. You can position things so that you can smash a fireball and even two blue barrels with the same hammer. If you can hammer 2 or 3 blue barrels and 2 fireballs and they are 800 and 500 pointers then you can substantially increase your score.

You can also leach 100 points off the first blue barrels that falls straight down by jumping by it and then leach several 100 points by jumping near (away from) the fireball on the 1st girder.

The thing is, it's highly risky stuff, especially on the first level. You can't controll the barrels as well on this level and even grabbing that bottom hammer substantially increases the difficulty level.

I had to check it out so I ran to the top and just jumped barrels. Sure enough when it hit 400 after the next one he threw there were only 3 then 2 and one. Totally pointless but kind of neat, you still have time to get up the ladder after the last one.

Holy crap!! This is crazy. In all the time I owned a DK i never heard of this. I'm amazed that the programmers even thought of this.

Is this on one life? If so, record it and submit it to Twin Galaxies! That crushes the current 1st level score by over 6K.

The TG score is for the barrel board only. JamBurgler's 20K includes the rivets (which is the only board you can get points by jumping next to Kong's foot).

He is talking about including the rivet board as well, the "entire" Level 1.

Here is a link to the current record 1st screen ----->http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0N8-R28PCg

What's scary is this score could have easily been over 14k had a few more things went his way.
