Axial v. Radial Cap Replacement (Galaga)

I need to replace C1 (470uf 16v) on my Galaga board and have a couple of questions.

The cap currently on the board is an axial capacitor (470uf 32v) and I only have a radial (470uf 25v). I just want to confirm that you could use a higher voltage capacitor and a radial in lieu of an axial.

Below is a pic of the board with the bad axial cap and then a pic of the radial in place. I haven't soldered it on yet and just want confirmation that this is acceptable and will work.

Your replacement cap is a lower voltage rating? That is not a good idea. However, I replace old axials with radials often without any problems.
 
The Galaga manual calls for a 470uf 16v at C1... The cap in there now is a 470uf 32v... the cap I want to go with is a 470uf 25v.

I am thinking that this board is not an original Galaga board (possibly Bosconian that was converted to Galaga) because it is not marked as Galaga and has some strange jumpers/mods done to it. Also, looking at some Bosconian PCB images it appears that C1 might be a 470uf 35v. I would have to check the Bosconian manual to confirm though.

looks like the negative leg of the capacitor where it meets the ground rail/pad there needs to be soldered. i would anyway.
 
If the spec is 16V then 25V will be fine. The 32V cap was probably installed by the guy before you, doing exactly the same thing. "Hrm. No 16V units, but here's a 32V. Score!"

Bosconian calls C1 10,000uF,35V. There's also C6 which is 470uF,16V. Schematics are here: http://www.crazykong.com/manuals/Bosconian.sch.pdf

You need to figure out which cap it is, then replace it with equal or *higher* voltage rating.

If you measure the voltage, what does it read with the old cap installed?
 
Just for future reference... Bob Roberts sells cap kits for Galaga, Pac Man and a few other game boards with all the right Axial caps in them.

The highest voltage on a Galaga board is 12VDC...give or take. So, a 25V cap is fine.

Thanks for confirming that this would work and clearing up the radial v. axial question guys.

The board powers up but resets during gameplay... Time to start a new thread for that.

I'm looking for axial caps right now, which are either not being made or are 2 or 3 buck a pop. I have an axial right now rated at 47uf25v... would it be ok to replace it with a 47uf63v? I know you can go over on the voltage without problem, but is there a limit? Is 25v to 63v too big of a jump? It's for a PCB.
 
Thanks for the answer, I appreciate it. They were the only axial caps I could find at a reasonable price. I guess I'm going to have to go with radial to replace a lot of the axials I need, since a lot are hard to find/expensive.

Well Mousers search system isn't working correctly. To find all my caps, I used the following link below.

Oops, I figured out why they weren't showing up for me. In the last field, where it has "Product", I have always clicked on "Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors," because well... thats the product I'm searching for. When I don't click on that value, a lot of times I'll have way too many results and sometimes items that aren't even capacitors. I hadn't realized up until this point that clicking that would actually exclude certain aluminum electrolytic capacitors. I guess common sense didn't prevail in this instance.

Jesus Christ, you need a manual to be able to find what you need on Mouser... it's definitely not friendly to those not familiar with it.

Well too late, I already placed my order. It's kind of frustrating because I'll bet I can now find some of those axials that I replaced with radials. With shipping about $10 on each order, it's not worth it for me to place the order again for $3 worth of caps.

I also started looking for pots... and boy was that a mistake. It's nearly impossible to search for the type I need, without knowing how mouser labels all their pots. It's not as simple as reading a part # or type out of a manual and then searching for it on mouser. There are often too many search parameters for those who don't have extensive training in electronic repair.

Yeah all the caps I had a hard time finding in axials are available and at reasonable prices. Fuck Mouser. Looks like the axials will have to wait until my next order unless I can find a way to cancel it.
