AVGN playing arcade games at MagFest

is that a video game celeb?
PAX is so much better.

They really need an arcade section however.

Where would console and PC be w/out the Arcade...

Bold = I hope you're being sarcastic.

If not: everyone on Youtube trying to be funny while acting frustrated reviewing bad games...they're pretty much copying what this guy started. He's hit n' miss for most people. If you didn't follow him from early on, his newer videos are likely gonna be miss for new comers. His most famous video is probably his TMNT for the NES review (cussing and shit...so...probably NSFW).

I fell out of love for PA about 6-7 years ago. Props for Child's Play, but otherwise...you know, I better just leave my opinion at "Props for Child's Play".

Yeah, James is one of the biggest icons on youtube. I would think any male between 25-35 would love his stuff, given that he usually expresses on his videos the very same frustration that age level faced with crappy games of the day. Sometimes the cursing becomes a bit much, but the content is quality.

He should branch into arcade games and arcade repair for sure. Imagine all the fun you could have with an episode where he tries to fix a Pole Position! :D

Edit: Cool to see a working 6 player X-Men there with sound. :)

yeah I never watched his videos. Watching the video in the OP, it was odd to see all of these kids consider this guy a celeb asking for autographs and stuff. I know enough to be able to review games on my own and point out poor design on my own w/ out the fake taped fustration. Is he the best they could come up with?

After working in the industry for so long I consider real celebs the hard core developers and even some folks in the media. Not some random guy with a video camera and a youtube account. The PA guys have so much more going on than this guy. I'm sure he never quit is day job doing these videos.

Ouch.

Good point you make though.

I'm not sure I'd tag James as a celebrity, but then again what is a celebrity? I mean if you watched a few of his videos, then saw him randomly walking down the street, you might go "Hey AVGN! I saw you on Youtube!" Even that little bit of recognition might deem somebody as a celebrity.

certainly not enough to bring a stack of consoles up and have him sign them all.

I understand geeked out to a real gaming celeb. Even while working in the industry, I had Yu Suzuki sign my Genesis copy of Virtua Racing... yeah that $100 cart with the extra chip in it for 3D.

I am with you on developers being the more important "celebs". There are a lot of people in the industry that gain huge followings for shitty attention whore gimmicks. It's really annoying when a talentless ass clown or some chick that flashed the correct parts gains notoriety and even worse...design/dev/media work...for...well...being an ass clown and flashing the correct parts.

This guy, however, I dig. I never got the sense he was doing it in order to "get a foot in" and gain notoriety like a ton of attention whores in the game industry. More he did a few videos for fun and it went viral...and there became demand for more. Like Penny Arcade or Seanbaby.

Edit: and yeah...bringing stacks of consoles and things he has nothing to do with to sign is kinda...yeah...but that's on the dudes bringing stuff to sign more so than the dude signing it.

For what its worth the AVGN videos make me laugh. At the end of the day that's all that matters. Would i want his autograph? Hell no.

yeah i'm not commenting on if he's funny or if people should watch him.

I was just suprised that he's what they could come up with as a celeb and the "fan reaction" to him. I'm going to be really sad if my kids grow up to be that lame.

I actually agree with you. I'm guessing they're bored with disposal income. Someone should introduce them to pot.

I've watched his vids for years. I really enjoy them. I'd love to see a series on Arcade games done by someone with a good sense of humor. The guy does a great job with them and really is much more than just a dude in his room complaining. If you watch them for a while they really grow on you.

As for his celebrity status...there's plenty of people we talk about non-stop around here. Steve Wiebe, Billy Mitchell, Nolan Bushnell, Eugene Jarvis...these guys are all "celebrities" in our little corner of the world. Would my Mom know of any of them...No. But for gamers, James (AVGN) is just as big as Wiebe or Billy. I have marquees signed by some of these guys, and would love to have my Robotron marquee signed by Jarvis.

Heck, even Phet is a celebrity around these parts! ;) His restorations are worthy of it! I would love to see him put together a video series. How 'bout it Phet!

I will second this. I am don't know of him to be much of a repair guy. I do enjoy his segments though. Watching this video, I was hoping he would play my 720 and maybe have something entertaining to say about it. He was playing the Ikari 3 next to it, as I recall. I realize that sounds a little fanboyish. I definitely didn't get him to sign my butt cheek or anything. I did sort of accidentally break in line however, that put me about the 6th guy in the room or so. It was sort of dumb luck. I had no idea exactly how long the line was till I saw this video! I think the nerdy girl sitting next to me said she had been in line for over an hour.

having an intellivision myself as a kid, i laughed my ass off at this one

LMFAO! That's one of my favorites too. Which video is it where the guy who plays the guitar sits down beside him for the video? The one part the music sounds like club music or something and the two start imitating it. My fav. AVGN video will always be Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde!! :001_shappy:
